Delivering maximum warmth and doing so with a touch of style, the Berghaus Women's Popena Hooded Hydrodown Fusion Jacket features a hybrid mix of 600-fill hydrophobic goose down and Hydroloft synthetic insulation to deliver cold-weather comfort regardless of conditions.
I am wearing the Women’s Berghaus Popena Hydrodown Fusion Jacket. Standout feature of this big puffy down jacket is that it is extremely warm in the coldest of winter activities and the coldest of winter weather and it is ultra lightweight and packable, but it still offers all of that warmth and that loft.
So the insulation here is Hydrodown Fusion, which is a mixture of DWR treated down. It is traditional down, high quality down that has a coating to resist moisture. So if it becomes wet, it doesn't lose its loft like regular down and it keeps you warmer longer and dries out quicker if it becomes wet. Now that down is mixed with Hydroloft synthetic insulation and Hydroloft is just a lightweight synthetic. It is made to mimic the structure of down. And synthetic materials are really great against moisture. If it becomes wet, it is going to repel that moisture. So if you are out in the winter taking on a little bit of moisture with snow, even with freezing rain or something like that, this isn’t a waterproof jacket, but that type of insulation is going to hold up a lot better than traditional down. So you still get all that packability. You still get that lightweight feel. So this is also body mapped with that insulation, so you get more insulation where you need it and less insulation where you don’t, where you tend to build up heat under your arms and things like that. So it is a really smart design and definitely a very warm piece.
Other than that, you have got a little bit longer length on this jacket. So a lot of down jackets that I see kind of just come to the hip, but this is a little bit lower. If I turn to this side, you can see that that covers a little bit lower there, so you do get a little bit more warmth there. Down at the bottom hem you have a stretchy draw cord that comes out to either side. So you have the dropped hem in the back and you can cinch that down. You do have a full length zipper. And this zipper is two way. So the one thing I really appreciate about two way zippers. You can unzip it form the bottom if you just need to vent or if you are wearing a climbing harness and you use this as belay jacket, if you have got a backpack with a hip belt or if you just need to unzip from the bottom. It is a really great feature. It is a small detail that makes a big difference. And then, obviously, the full length zipper goes all the way up to a nice collar. There is nice, soft material on the inside of that collar, so if you have got it zipped up all the way, it is not going to irritate your chin. And it really protects your neck here.
The face fabric of this piece has mini rip stop in it. You have got a DWR coating on the outside of this fabric. So it is going to hold up to moisture a little bit. And it is a very lightweight fabric. So you have got baffles here as well to keep the down in the places where you want it so you don’t have unwanted shifting of that insulation. You have got some pockets as well. So two hand warmer pockets right here on the front. On the inside you have lined with some really soft fleece material for chilly hands. And the cuff you have fully adjustable cuff here. You have got Velcro there and then you have a lot of stretch. So this works great with gloves.
Obviously you have got the hood here. You have adjustability around the top of the hood and on the back. And you have got a really nice brim, kind of a stiffened brim on the front. So if you cinch this jacket down, on the sides here you can really get a nice fit around your head and then in the back you can cinch that down around there. So it fits around your head really well. I wouldn’t call this a helmet compatible hood. This is more of a trail piece. But it is really nicely baffled here to keep your head nice and warm on those cold days.
You do have an interior chest pocket for smaller items. So you have got that pocket there and no other pockets on the inside of the jacket. So they keep the features pretty simple. But all of the features here, you are getting a very warm winter jacket for those activities like backpacking, hiking, possibly a belay jacket or anything else you can throw at it. It is the Berghaus Women’s Popena Hydrodown Fusion Jacket.
