A long time favorite of backpackers, the Therm-A-Rest Z Lite closed-cell foam pad is an excellent option for 3-season usage. It’s very versatile. You can see fully extended, you have a full range of cushioning beneath your body. But you can also use this in other manners. You can fold it in half and really bolster that cushioning and support beneath your torso or a specific part of your body where you’d want it most. It even doubles as a great camp seat by stacking it in a different fashion. It’s not compressible in the manner of some other sleeping pads, but the closed-cell foam construction makes it extremely lightweight and the accordion-style makes it very convenient to lash to a backpack. The foam on the Z Lite varies actually top and bottom. The bottom foam is incredibly durable – makes it stand up to pretty much any terrain, while the top is a softer foam that makes it that much more comfortable as your sleeping surface. The Z Lite is manufactured in the USA, in Seattle, Washington. I do want to point out on the Z Lite that again, this is a great option to be used in conjunction with a different type of pad for 4-season usage. On its own, it’s not warm enough for colder weather, but if you lay this underneath a self-inflating pad, an inflatable pad, you’ll bolster the overall R-value and be that much warmer and that much more comfortable into that fourth season.
