Another rainy afternoon is a perfect opportunity to check out the Mountain Hardwear Women’s Epic Jacket. This is a lightweight, waterproof breathable piece. It’s definitely durable enough for hiking, backpacking or general everyday use. It’s got a nice 3-point adjustable hood that zips up all the way and there’s an attachment piece in the back here that lets me adjust the brim to exactly where it’s comfortable, so it’s not hanging in my face. I’ve also got 2 draw cord adjustments here. The draw cords are actually inside the jacket, so it’s not hitting you in the face. You can feel it with your hand. It’s right here and I can adjust it. Pull tension on the front here and inside Mountain Hardwear has done a nice job of laying that cord inside so it’s not banging you in the face, especially if it’s windy. This jacket has a double storm flap on the outside and a second storm flap behind the zipper on the other side. It’s a nice feature and definitely helps to keep you dry. The inside of the jacket is fully seam taped, so you’re definitely going to be waterproof in this. It’s real lightweight and helps to breathe really well. If you’re hiking in wet weather, but it’s warm out or really humid, the pit zip on this jacket offers some great ventilation – they’re easy to use. You also have an adjustable Velcro cuff. So you can kind of loosen that up if you want a bit of extra ventilation. Snug it down, it fits nicely. The bottom of the jacket all the way around has a hem and on either side you’ve got the draw cords with the cord lock. You can cinch that in nice and tight and kind of tailor it back and forth. One of the features that makes the Women’s Epic Jacket pretty trail ready is if you’re wearing a pack with a shoulder strap, they’ve done drop seaming on the shoulder here so this is nice and clean on top. You don’t get any seam bunching or rubbing under the pack. It’s nice and clean, easy and comfortable.
