Let’s take a closer look at the innovative line of SB sleeping bags from Kelty. The SB bags feature innovative DriDown insulation and also have a unique fabric technology that is used at the hood and the feet to further insure all weather performance.
The bag I have here is the men’s SB 20, so a 20 degree bag, really a three season option. Women’s version is also available. There is also a men’s and women’s 35 degree bag, so more of a warm weather backpacking option. In all of those variations of the bag you have got a 60 inch zipper, so basically ending just above the foot box. In it not being full length or going the whole way around it actually increases thermal efficiency. Wherever you have got a zipper you have got potential that cold air can creep into a bag. So you cut down on that with the shorter zipper. That also cuts down on weight, which is obviously of importance to back packers.
Looking behind the zipper and addressing the matter of cold air potentially coming through at the zippers you do have a flap, an insulated flap that runs the length of that zipper. Extra insulation here at the neck, the whole way around on that contoured hood. You have got points of adjustability on the hood to cinch that down around you, to keep you warm at night. There is also a thermal efficient and weight saving mummy cut to these bags, so all the way around keeping in mind both thermal performance and also weight savings for that back pack.
The SB bags are insulated with premium 800 and fill DriDown so you have got a very lofty, very compressible, very warm down insulation inside this bag. The downfall of down over the years is that if it does become wet it loses its ability to retain warmth. Those insulative qualities kind of fall apart. DriDown insulation has a hydrophobic treatment that keeps it from getting wet. It takes a lot longer before it should become wet. If it does become wet, it dries that much faster. And throughout it remains able to insulate, to keep you warm. And that is a big plus over traditional down.
Kelty goes a step further with these bags using a highly water resistant fabric at both the head and the foot box of the bags, places where inside a tent you have the most susceptibility to water, ground water, moisture. It really makes these SB bags highly weather resistant.
Each SB sleeping bag from Kelty comes with its own compression stuff sack. So a nice design here that really cinches things down to its smallest point so that it fits effectively inside your pack. Again, just a great set of features here on the SB series of sleeping bags from Kelty. Ideal for backpacking performance.
