Deuter: The Passion Behind the Packs

Deuter: The Passion Behind the Packs

Based in Augsburg, an ancient European city with Roman roots and a rich heritage in textiles, Deuter has been manufacturing tarps and backpacks since before the start of the 20th century! They were early suppliers of the large iconic tents at Munich’s famed Oktoberfest and by the 1930’s, after the release of their celebrated Tauern rucksack, Deuter backpacks became a prominent fixture in the Alps and the Himalaya.

We were thrilled to have the opportunity to visit with their design team in Germany and take a closer look at their heritage of innovation and see how they continue to break new ground today. They were the first to introduce suspended mesh backpanels, pioneered bikepacks, and have played a key role in the establishment of safety standards in child carriers that have been broadly adopted in Europe. A skilled team of female designers oversees Deuter’s women’s specific pack construction.

With Bavaria as the backdrop, the employees at Deuter are avid outdoor enthusiasts who are constantly testing and using the very products they build and bringing their own experience back to the offices to begin work on the next wave of packs. We were lucky enough to get up into the Alps together to do some testing (and laughing!) of our very own.

As Managing Director Martin Reibel states, “All product is developed with the end use in mind. ‘What does the climber need? The hiker, the mountain biker, the ski touring guys?”

Committed to innovation and out there on the trails and in the mountains using the very gear that you can count on for your own explorations, that’s Deuter!
