Breaking the 2 pound barrier, the innovative, freestanding Big Agnes Fly Creek UL 1 is an ounce-counting backpacker's dream come true.
Big Agnes Fly Creek UL 1 Tent Video
This is the Big Agnes Fly Creek UL1 backpacking tent. The UL indicates ultra light and at less than two pounds this free standing tent certainly is that. It is ideal for fast and light backpackers, through hikers, anyone looking to cut a little bit of weight on their tent and willing to live with some streamlined dimensions to get that light weight design.
Reflecting that light weight design, to streamline 22 square feet of interior space still plenty of room for a single, solo backpacker. You can see fairly short peak height here, 38 inches, but that is certainly still enough for me to get in the tent and comfortably into my sleeping bag. I have got a 72 inch long by 20 inch wide pad, which is a fairly standard pad length and width. And, again, you will see there is ample room in here for the solo backpacker.
The free standing Fly Creek UL1 does have a small front vestibule. It is only about five and a half square feet, so, again, really streamlined. Keeps down weight. It gives some room for a pair of boots, a pack, kind of tucked in under and out of the weather, but, again, pretty small vestibule.
Kind of peel back the rain fly here. This is a silicon treated nylon rain flap, again, to pro-tect the interior of the tent from the elements. Maintaining that light weight design you have got a light weight polyester rip stop body, polyester mesh which provides air flow, keeps condensation from building up, makes it a little cooler in warmer weather and, again, just helps to maintain that overall weight.
You have got extremely light weight, but also durable DAC feather light NSL poles. Click construction throughout the tent. This pole is a single hub pole. So looking here above you can see that hub from which the pole goes to two front point, prominent points and a rear grometted point. Again, the design on this tent does give it free standing structure.
As we mentioned earlier the Big Agnes Fly Creek UL1 does weigh in under two pounds. You do have the option to go even lighter. If you purchase the Big Agnes Fly Creek EL1 footprint—and it is sold separately—you can use it, the footprint, with these poles with the rain fly for an extremely ultra light weight shelter. You will actually get your packed weight down under a pound and a half.
That footprint is also a great add on, just to add further protection to the tent itself, basi-cally a secondary layer underneath the tent where roots, where rocks, where ground water can take its toll over time on your tent.
Internally there are some hanging loops for a gear loft. The Big Agnes triangle gear loft fits perfectly. Again, it is sold separately.
Fly Creek UL1, just an excellent, compact, light weight option for fast and light back packing and for solo through hikers.
