The innovative Luxury Map self-inflating mattress utilizes pressure mapping technology and strategic die-cutting to provide supportive cushioning where it's needed most and reduce foam density in high-pressure areas.
The plush and very comfortable Therm-a-Rest Luxury Map Sleeping Pad gets its name from the innovative technology that Therm-a-Rest has put into it, which is pressure map-ping. And basically what pressure mapping means is that you have got more supportive, higher density foam in certain areas and lower density, more cushioning and comfortable foam in other areas. So areas on your... near your shoulder or your hips, those high pres-sure areas, it is more soft, more comfortable. And then in other areas of the pad they give a little bit more support and, overall, just provides really, really comfortable night’s sleep.
The foam on the interior of this pad is open cell foam, which acts kind of like a sponge with air. So as soon as you open that valve the foam expands on the inside, let’s air in and is semi self inflating. So this is considered a self inflating sleeping pad. And what I suggest doing is when you get to camp or when you are ready to set up camp, I roll out the sleeping pad, open up that valve and let the mat do its thing for about 20 or 30 minutes. It is going to inflate most of the way. And then at the end you will want to just give a couple of puffs and make sure that it is at your desired thickness.
One thing I really love about Therm-a-Rest valves is that this one, in particular, seems to be really durable. It is going to last a long time and there is a little bit of rubberized mate-rial on the outside of this... of this valve. And what that allows you to do is once you have inflated the pad fully and you go ahead and lay on it, you can adjust that pressure by opening the valve. So some people like to really sink down into their sleeping pad. Some people like a really firm sleeping pad. But this allows you to once you lay on the pad reach back behind you and let some of that air out. So, unlike some other sleeping pads I have seen that once you open that valve it is just the flood gates are open and it lets out all the air, this is really a dialed in. So you can let out little bits of air at a time. It is really convenient.
As I said, this is a really plush sleeping pad. It is definitely meant for camping, car camping, family camping. It rolls down to be pretty small for how thick the pad is when it is blown up, but, you know, definitely not necessarily a backpackable option.
You have a full three inches of thickness with this pad and with that foam in there you do have an R value of 6.8 which is really high. It is perfect for four season use. So in the coldest of temperatures this is definitely going to insulate you from the ground and keep your heat in while you are sleeping.
This pad comes in three sizes: regular, large and extra large. In front of me I have the regular size which is a standard 20 inches wide, 72 inches long. The large is 25 inches wide and 77 inches long and the extra large is 30 inches wide and 77 inches long. So that gives you a lot of sprawling comfort.
If you are using this for car camping, family camping, those different sizes are going to be really handy for if you just want sprawling comfort, if you want to lay a couple of these next to each other. This rectangular design is really great to make a nice base. And, all in all, it is a really comfortable, semi packable pad for four season camping.
It is the Therm-a-Rest Luxury Map Sleeping Pad.
