The innovative Sierra Designs Tensegrity 1 FL tent is a radical redesign of non-freestanding tents. A spacious interior, an external gear closet, optimal ventilation, and a versatile trekking pole (poles not included) pitch make this tent stand out from its peers.
Sierra Designs is known for new innovations and coming up with better ways to enjoy the outdoors. The Tensegrity series of tents is no exception. Right behind me we have got the Sierra Designs Tensegrity 1 FL tent and we are going to take a look at all the features, all the different configurations and what makes this tent so innovative.
This is a light weight, three season, one person tent. And it is a single wall design tent. So you have got waterproof fabric throughout. On the rain fly you have 20 D nylon rip stop fabric. It is waterproof, fully seam taped. On the floor you have a little bit more durable 30 D fabric. On the sides it is also waterproof and you have a 15 D fabric, so a little bit lighter weight there, saves a lot of weight. And then you also have really ultra light weight mesh.
This is not a free standing tent, so it pitches with trekking poles and with one single pole down at the bottom. And there is a lot of innovations with this tent. There is a couple of different configurations with this front vestibule, this front gear shed panel. And the stand out feature of this tent that I haven’t seen on any other tents is that the top part of the tent with this trekking pole design is actually more spacious. So you have a lot of room there on the floor of the tent, but the tent walls are actually shaped like this, so you have kind of a Y shape. That gives a lot of livability inside the tent. It doesn’t add a lot of weight and it just makes this tent really, really comfortable and really easy to spend time inside with this gear shed in the front. You have got a lot of space out there and we will take a closer look at all the features.
So with this one person tent you have got one really big opening door right here. And this being a single wall tent, you have the front door that zips up completely, but you can also peel back that waterproof material and, like I have it opened back here, you can have that large amount of ventilation. So with that really breathable mesh, I can zip that up. So on a nice sunny day you can have all that mesh breathability with this big door here. You have also got a door on this side, and this is where I could access my gear. So underneath of this vestibule here you put your back pack, your boots, whatever you need to store there and that is completely protected. You can zip this up and there is ventilation behind me, ventilation over here and you have also ventilation down at the feet. So with this door on the front, you have really easy access in and out of the tent. There is a little awning right here as well, so on a little bit of a light rain or in a storm you can still be protected with this awning. If it is really windy and stormy and you need just a little bit of ventilation, but you want to have that protection, you can zip this up half way and have that mesh flap part of the way up the tent to still have that breathability. So you have got the same thing on the other side, this breathable material on the side wall of the tent. And just being in the tent you can see how much room there is above my head. So unlike A frame style tents or even dome style tents, this tent really opens up around your shoulders and around your head and makes the tent really, really livable. Down at the feet you have that big pole down at the bottom, so you have a lot of room at the feet. And, again, you have got 360 degrees of ventilation with this tent.
On the interior you have a nice pocket right here for storing a head lamp or something you want to get your hands on quickly. There are gear attachment points. There is two here in the corners. You could hang a light or something like that inside the tent. But, overall, just a lot of livability, one of the most roomy one person back packing tents I have ever seen.
Once you get the hang of it, set up for this tent is really easy. As I mentioned, this is a trekking pole style tent. You can purchase separate poles directly from Sierra Designs. Those are sold separately. This is meant to be pitched with trekking poles. So I have got my poles right here and if I just kind of tug on that, you can see that this is really stable. It is one of my biggest concerns with trekking pole style tents is that they are not going to be as stable as some free standing tents, but I have no concerns with this tent, even n windy conditions.
Here I have got my trekking poles set at about 120 centimeters. But you can use different lengths of poles. So if you have fixed length poles, you can set it up on different spots down here on... there is different toggle points on the bottom of the tent. And Sierra Designs includes instructions on how to move the toggle to different places and basically you can use any trekking poles that are between 120 centimeters and 140 centimeters. So that covers most trekking poles that are out there.
Down at the bottom where you have the pole on your feet, that is really easy to set up, really easy to stake everything out. And there is different configurations with this tent. So I have the main configuration here with this big panel giving me a nice gear closet. But if you want to, you can roll this whole gear closet up and have a lot of visibility and a lot of ventilation. So on a nice day where you know it is not going to be rainy or anything like that, you can roll this up, have it out of the way. You can also set up your two ground up points on the panel back here, you can set it up so you have a nice awning. And it is high enough that you can sit under it. You can have a nice shade on a sunny day. And I found it really, really, you know, easy to set up. You can tie it around trees if you want or you can use sticks. You know, this is a one person tent, so you wouldn’t have another set of trekking poles that you can use sticks to set the awning up. And it is just a great place to store gear, store, you know, different things that you want to keep safe under that awning.
The big story with this tent is innovation and even the stuff sack is innovative. When you need to pack this tent down, pack it away, it comes with a stuff sack for the tent body. And a lot of times when I am back packing with tents, I normally separate the tent body from the poles and the stakes anyway, so this is really great. So you have got one stuff sack here for the tent body. It rolls up really nicely in there, included instructions. And then you have a separate sack for the poles that comes with the tent. And you also have a different side for the stakes. So you throw your stakes in there and the pole in there. You can attach them together if you want, or you can keep them separate. But it is just a really great way to pack up your tent.
All in all, the Tensegrity one person FL tent is the perfect backpacking, camping tent, light weight, easy to set up. You have complete protection from the elements. You have got a couple of different configurations. You can use this tent in different ways and you have got a lot of innovation, again, from Sierra Designs.
It is the Sierra Designs Tensegrity 1 FL tent.
