A stargazing backpacker’s dream come true, the freestanding Sierra Designs Nightwatch 2 tent incorporates modularity that delivers full view of the sky on clear nights while still delivering all of the backcountry functionality you expect in a backpacking tent.
The Nightwatch 2 has 30.5 square feet of interior space. Dual gear closets are accessed from inside the tent to keep gear storage out of the way of the door and provide an additional combined 14 square feet (7 sq. ft. per closet) of sheltered space for stashing larger items like packs and boots. Another cool feature is the inclusion of the Sierra Designs Night Glow accessory, a light diffusing “shade” that couples with any headlamp (not included) to hang from the ceiling of the tent to serve as a backpacking/camping lantern.
The hybrid double/single wall design of the Nightwatch 2 adds stability without weight, while ultra-light clips, a single shock-corded DAC Pressfit aluminum pole, an integrated awning pole that maximizes the door opening and drip line without the weight of a support pole, and the uncommonly large single drop door add to the list of great features. The trail weight of the tent is 4 pounds, 7 ounces.
Ample mesh on the tent body and a huge covered foot vent that creates ventilation between the foot box and the door provide circulation to fight condensation build-up in the Nightwatch 2. Coated with waterproof polyurethane, the 70D nylon taffeta floor and polyester taffeta rainfly are lightweight and durable. Additionally, the rainfly has a roll-up feature that enables you to regulate ventilation and even open up the canopy almost entirely for optimal stargazing. Rolling back the fly also allows the gear closet access points to serve as dual side doors. All of the Nightwatch 2’s seams are tape-sealed to protect the tent interior from the elements.
A custom-fit footprint (sold separately) can be used to further protect the floor of the Sierra Designs Nightwatch 2 against rocks, exposed roots, mud and ground water.

Real Customer Reviews
- Very durable innovative design
Likes: Ventilation is awesome. I really like the fact that my head is by the front mesh door where I can get a nice breeze in warm weather. I like the elimination of a vestibules by the door. Spacious side vestibules.
Dislikes: A little heavy however that is what makes it more durable.
- Great ventilation
Likes: Had great ventilation during a rainy night. We are hot sleepers, and most tents feel too stuffy when the rain fly is on. We left the front window open during heavy rain all night and stayed dry and cool. Did not have any condensation issues in the tent.
Dislikes: Gear closets are handy but difficult to access quickly from outside the tent. The tent is a little heavy/bulky for backpacking.
- Great tent for solo backcountry comfort
Likes: Very unique which is what drew me to this tent, I like the idea of sleeping under the stars and choose this for the intergrated/retractable rain fly. Remindes me of my old convertible- best of both worlds. The gear closets served great for my 60ltr pack and shoes on the other side. It can accommodate 2 but for a bigger person like me it is perfect mix of weight and size for backpacking.
Dislikes: Setup with the front entry into the wind, the vent at the foot end will catch any wind or rain that might blow in. That is just the trade off from a unique design vs a dome or quater dome I guess. Other than that no complaints thus far after 3 outtings Feb-April in NE Ohio
- The mariot of backcountry camping
Likes: This thing is HUGE! The two gear closets are great for storing gear or a sleeping dog. Great ventilation, especially when nice out and rolling back the rain fly. Cannot speak to condensation during rainy/cold weather but I bet it's minimal. Overall a great two person tent or individual with dogs. Material appears to be wel made and should stand the test of time.
Dislikes: Heavy heavy heavy! Coming in over 5lbs with the footprint. But luxury vs weight!
