Details

The freestanding Sierra Designs Lightning 2 is a lightweight and roomy 2-person tent that’s simple to set up and take down. One massive single drop door and dual gear closets help to maximize backcountry livability while saving ounces.

The Lightning 2 has 29.9 square feet of interior space. Dual gear closets are accessed from inside the tent to keep gear storage out of the way of the door and provide an additional combined 8.2 square feet (4.1 sq. ft. per closet) of sheltered space for stashing larger items like packs and boots.

The hybrid double/single wall design of the Lightning 2 adds stability without weight, while ultra-light clips, a single shock-corded DAC Pressfit aluminum pole, 15" integrated awning poles that maximize the door opening and drip line without the weight of a support pole, and the uncommonly large single drop door add to the list of great features. The trail weight of the tent is 3 pounds, 14 ounces.

Ample mesh on the tent body and a huge covered foot vent that creates ventilation between the foot box and the door provide circulation to fight condensation build-up in the Lightning 2. Coated with waterproof polyurethane, the nylon taffeta floor and polyester taffeta rainfly are lightweight and durable. All of the Lightning 2’s seams are tape-sealed to protect the tent interior from the elements.

A custom-fit footprint (sold separately) can be used to further protect the floor of the Sierra Designs Lightning 2 against rocks, exposed roots, mud and ground water.

Likes: This tent gets 5 stars from me but 3 stars for the shipping errors and extended length of time required to fix the manufacturer's flaws. (Average of 4). This tent is light weight and requires a small amount of space in my back pack. Set up takes a little practice but is easy enough for a novice in the dark. The rain fly being built in is a very nice touch that saves time and effort. The vestibules are awesome and having access to them from the interior of the tent is great.

Dislikes: I received the tent with a manufacturers defect. After a very brief conversation with Sierra designs (despite the fact that I purchased through backcountry edge) they overnighted me the correct poles. Customer service was great but without the correct poles for the tent I am a little worried that damage may have resulted from some excess force being applied to connections. The tent comes with directions but not dimensions or technical data for the hardware. The manual says "longer pole in front, shorter pole in rear". This is not very helpful when both poles are the same length (manufacturers error). I finally had to measure the poles to ensure I wasn't crazy. Better details would help.
