Built on the concept that even the best of waterproof/breathable membranes cannot fully keep up with the heat (and moisture) your body creates during high aerobic activities, the extra-long Sierra Designs Elite Cagoule incorporates multiple vents and delivers maximum coverage.
Built with backpackers in mind, the Sierra Designs Elite Cagoule has an extended length cut. It has got roominess to be worn over top of a back pack and it has got excellent venting to allow for when heat builds up. Let’s take a closer look at its fit and its features.
Recognizing that even the most waterproof, breathable fabrication still only allows so much air to escape and when you are on the go and you are carrying a heavy pack, sometimes you really just want to push warm air out so that you are not sweating on the inside. The Cagoule actually builds in vents, always open vents. You are still getting waterproof protection, but there’s all kinds of spots here on the body of the jacket for air to escape.
You have got a water proof fabric, certainly. You have got taped seams. But that venting, that breathability is being delivered by openings on the sides of the jacket.
As far as the fit of the Cagoule is concerned, it is definitely meant to be spacious enough that you have got room for a pack, room to move within it. But I should mention I am wearing a large. Ideally I would be wearing a medium. So you are seeing a little extra length here on the sleeves and a little bit of extra length on the body. But that long cut is intentional so that when water is pouring down and you are getting soaked and wet, the seat of your pants when you sit or your lap when you are sitting or even on the move is not getting wet. So you have got some extended coverage there, which really is a nice feature often overlooked on backpacking style rain jackets.
There is some Velcro adjustability here at the sleeves. It is also a hooded jacket. Pretty minimalist design. There, again, we have got the backpacker in mind. So it is not a helmet compatible hood by any means and it isn’t meant to be. It is meant to fit your head. It has got some shaping, some brim here, so, again, even in heavy rains you are staying dry.
There aren’t any traditional pockets on this jacket, but there are pass-throughs that allow you to get to the inside beneath the jacket to pockets you may have on mid layers, jackets beneath it. With that venting you can certainly get into pants pockets as well. So you have still got access there. That isn’t always the case on other jackets. As far as getting the jacket on and off you have got a very deep chest treatment here. And, again, you can hear that Velcro going on there. It lets you kind of position and as you see fit to, again, enhance venting. Our can throw that open. You can throw open the panels on the sides as well.
Because of this design, our can also wear a back pack, run the pack straps right underneath there. You have still got your water proof protection. It is not gathering up on you or pinching shut as it might with a more traditional jacket.
Weighing just six ounces, packing down small so you can throw it in your backpack and have it at the ready, the Sierra Designs Elite Cagoule is an ideal option for hikers and backpackers looking for weather protection.
