A lightweight alternative to a warm-weather sleeping bag, the Sierra Designs Backcountry Quilt 700 35 Degree is open on one side in order to fully utilize your sleeping pad for under-body insulation and padding. While not for everyone, the innovative design saves weight and provides versatility.

The quilt is insulated with 700-fill DriDown water-resistant insulation. Renowned for their efficiency in retaining heat and compressible properties, the feathers and fibers of down have an incredibly soft, comfortable feel, and despite advances in synthetic materials, continue to provide the best warmth-to-weight ratio of any insulation available. The one inherent weakness of down insulation is that it loses much of its ability to maintain warmth when it gets wet; but DriDown performs differently. Employing a unique, innovative polymer application, DriDown actually creates a hydrophobic finish on each individual plume of down. This treatment results in insulation that stays dry longer and dries faster, should it become wet, than untreated down. Perhaps most impressively, this allows the insulation to retain 98% of its loft which translates into maintained warmth that untreated down bags simply cannot achieve. A 20D polyester ripstop shell further protects the insulation from the elements.

Full-length, insulated arm and hand pockets supply insulation under your arms and helps you easily create a tight, tucked-in seal around your body, as needed, or open up the quilt on warmer nights. A "hide-away integrated hood that insulates your head on colder nights, but naturally stays sealed and draft-free when not in use.

With a trail weight of just 1 pound, 8 ounces, the Sierra Designs Backcountry Quilt 700 35 Degree fits individuals up to 6’ 4". A stuff sack and storage sack are included.

Versatile, Lightweight Option
Reviewed by Michael P. - November 14, 2018

Likes: I was looking for a lightweight warm weather alternative to the traditional sleeping bag. The SD backcountry quilt was just what I was looking for. It is light at 1 lb 8 oz and packs down small. It is a bit of a quilt/sleeping bag hybrid. It has a foot box that functions more like a sleeping bag but then opens up like a quilt, an oversized quilt that can be wrapped around you if necessary. This is going to be my go-to bag anytime the temps are expected to be in the 40's or warmer. Until I have tested it in the 30's I will probably pack a more traditional style mummy bag. However, I will say that with the ability to wrap the quilt around you and the very well designed hood this bag might just live up to at least the comfort rating as long as you have an adequately rated sleeping pad. I love this thing. My family likes to use it as a quilt while watching tv on the couch, with their feet tucked in the footbox.

Dislikes: None, but would note that while the hood is really well designed, it does seem to really only work when laying on your back.

Feature rich sleeping quilt!

Likes: Very impressed with the features of this quilt. The hideaway hood is super comfortable and the width of the pad makes it easy to wrap around your whole body. The fabric is also super soft to the touch.

Dislikes: None so far!
