The Salomon S-Lab Adv Skin 12 Set vest pack has numerous innovative features and ample storage capacity (732 cu in). Its torso-hugging fit and at-the-ready soft flasks make it ideal for long days of running trails or racing ultras.

Supported by your upper body, the soft, form-fitting pack has a flexible and adjustable "twinlink" connection point across the sternum but otherwise leaves your ribcage free to expand so that breathing remains uninhibited. The shape and placement of the pack body ensures that weight remains consistent with your center of gravity rather than sagging low on your back and causing undue strain and fatigue. The mesh backpanel and broad perforated harness straps help to cushion the pack against your body while maximizing ventilation.

To ensure that you stay properly hydrated, the pack includes two 500 ml (16 oz) soft flasks that stow conveniently in dedicated front harness pockets. A sleeve in the main compartment of the pack can also easily accommodate a hydration bladder (not included) and drinking hoses can be routed over the shoulder or under the arm.

Pocketing abounds on the pack. A dedicated pocket within the main compartment stores a reflective safety blanket (included). There is a large rear “kangaroo” pocket as well as a separate zippered rear pocket. Zippered lateral pockets are ideal for gloves, a headlamp, gels or other small items. In addition to the gel pockets, small pockets high on the shoulder harness are optimally located for stowing gels or electrolytes. Salomon’s 4D attachment system efficiently carries trekking poles and multiple lash points allow you to carry additional gear externally. An integrated safety whistle is also included.

Great design and lightweight

Likes: The fit and placement of the pockets make the Adv Skin 12 Set vest a great buy for trail runners.

Dislikes: A third securing strap, bladder and waterproofed quick access side pockets for pills would be great improvements

Great running pack. Note that sizes run very small.

Likes: Very comfortable when you have the right size. I'm a medium in everything, and I needed an XL in this pack. My chest size is right on the L/XL boundary according to Salomon, but the L was too tight. (The pack is held on by elastic straps across the chest.)

The extensive pocket options front and back are really useful. Two small zipper pockets that aren't good for much (keys or a gel), and four much larger pockets front and back. The large back pocket will hold a pair of folded BD Distance Z poles, and these can be inserted and removed without removing the pack.

There are bells and whistles (literally), as the pack is designed to meet the requirements of some European trail races. So there is a built-in whistle, and an interior pocket contains a folded ultralight survival space blanket. There is also a removable bladder sleeve with a foil backing to insulate the bladder from body heat.

The vest comes with two half-liter bottles that ride in front. I prefer this to hose and bladder systems for running, but if you need more than a liter the pack is fully set-up for a bladder, with choices of tube routing.

Dislikes: The hook closing system is a little finicky---tiny plastic hooks have to be inserted through very tight cord loops. I tried to stretch out the loops I intend to use, and marked their location with a dot from a white marking pen, because there is a range of such loops up the entire front of the vest.

You need good shoulder flexibility to access the back pockets with the pack on.
