The Big Agnes Rattlesnake SL 2 mtnGLO tent is an excellent balance of weight, livability, and durability. The tent is even equipped with its own built-in lighting, making it an excellent option for 3-season backpacking.
I am hanging out in the Big Agnes Rattlesnake SL 2 person Mountain GLO tent. This is a nice, lightweight, backpacking tent. It is feature rich. It has got enough space for two backpackers and their gear and you have got plenty of storage pockets. It has even got its own integrated lighting system.
The first thing that stood out to me about the Rattlesnake is the pole construction. You technically have two poles at play. You have got one big hubbed pole which runs... it has got two arms on this side, two arms on that side and... which makes it really easy to set up. So you have a clip construction. They are DAC aluminum press fit poles so they are durable poles, but they are also very lightweight and packable. You also have a second brow pole here that goes right across the top of the tent. And that makes this sidewall a lot more vertical. So you get the most livability out of the inside of the tent.
You have got a durable, polyurethane coated nylon rip stop floor. This is a bathtub style floor so it comes up a little bit into the body of the tent. And Big Agnes has taken the seam up off the floor so that seam doesn’t come into contact with the ground. It is actually up a little bit higher. So that really helps in waterproof protection from the ground. So you are not going to get water in through that seam, but it is seam taped all the way throughout the rest of the floor.
You do have a little bit of lightweight fabric here for privacy and then above that fabric you have got lightweight mesh. So all the mesh in the top of this tent gives it so much breathability. So this tent is meant for those warmer kind of humid conditions where you do need a lot of ventilation and a lot of breathability. It is also going to cut down on condensation with all the mesh here in the top of the tent.
The floor dimensions are definitely big enough for two backpackers. You have got 88 inches in length, 52 inches across. And the peak height here gives you enough room to sit up in the tent. So if you have got two people in here and you need to spend any time inside the tent, let’s say waiting out bad weather or just in the evening playing cards or something like that, you do have enough elbow room and enough room here above your head.
Again, with that clip construction, they put the clips in really convenient spots to make that livable space here above your head. So not only do you have enough room on the floor for two people, but you have enough room around you here. And the weight definitely brings it down low enough to make it a backpacking option. You can pack it away.
You do have two doors here with two vestibules, so really easy and out. Each person has their own door. Or you could use the back as a backdoor and the front as kind of the in and out door. The door opens pretty big here, so you have got D shaped door. And something I really like about this design. They don’t have any toggle points here. They have this nice little piece of webbing. So when you open the door all you have to do is tuck it away and then it is out of your way. So you don’t have to fumble with the little toggles. You don’t have to roll back the door. So that just makes it really easy to get in and out of the tent.
There are plenty of pockets in here as well. So you have got pockets to store gear up off the ground. You have got points where you can attach a gear loft of something like that. It doesn't come with a gear loft, but you can certainly hang gear above you.
Another stand out feature and it is part of the name, it is the Mountain GLO Tent. So you do have integrated lighting. There is a really interesting design here. You have got very lightweight and small LED lights. You have got a string of them here and they just make a Y shape on the top of the tent or in the head area. And there is a battery housing that is lightweight. It is packable. It takes three triple A batteries and the thing I like about this is you can take it out of the tent when you are traveling with it or when you are storing it away. You have got a couple of different settings. You have the full lighting, so 100 percent. You have 50 percent, so it is a little bit more of a dim lighting and off. So you have got one single push button there. And then on the side you have an on/off switch. So if you are traveling with it or backpacking with it, you can just turn that switch off so that push button doesn’t get pressed and drain the battery while you are hiking or backpacking with it.
It is really easy to attach. It has got its own little pocket in there. And it provides enough light that you can maybe look around in your backpack or play cards. It provides very ambient light for the inside of the tent. It is not a super bright light. It is not distracting. But it is just enough to give you that extra little light that you need inside of your tent when you are camping out.
We will take a look at all of the other features. We will put the rain fly on and talk about that as well.
We have got the rain fly on the tent and the rain fly is constructed of a silicon treated nylon rip stop. It has got a polyurethane coating so you have got full waterproof protection. We have got the vestibule kind of rolled back here in the front just to show the door, easy in and easy out. But I can zip that closed. You have got a storm flap in front of that zipper so you are completely protected from the elements once you have everything battened down. You have got a vestibule on the other side so plenty of room to put your gear outside and still have protection.
The rain fly has some guy out points if you really need to stake everything out. We don’t have everything staked out today, just because it is a nice, beautiful day. But on both sides of the tent you can stake out the bottom so you have more ventilation coming in through the floor or through the bottom of the tent. And there is also a vent. So if you need to close that vent off, if you have got some rain coming in, you can definitely batten that down as well. But the features of the rain fly are really smart. They are simple to use, but you get a lot of ventilation and a lot of protection from condensation as well inside the tent with all those vents. So really smart design there.
The vestibule actually can roll back all the way as well. So you have a toggle point in the middle. You have a toggle point on the other side. And if you have a nice, beautiful day like today, you can do the same to the back and have lots of cross ventilation.
You are completely protected here under the canopy and if you purchase a custom fit footprint separately, you actually do have access to a fast pitch fly set up where you just set up the footprint on the floor, you attach the poles to that and then you put the fly on top. You can leave the tent body at home. So that gives you an ultra lightweight option. Or you can have a dry pitch set up where you set all of those up and then you put the tent body in afterwards so that you have that dry canopy to set everything up.
So this is a really versatile tent. You have got a roomy interior for two backpackers. You have the integrated lighting system. So you have got a fully featured tent here that is going to provide a lot of protection when you go into the backcountry. It is the Big Agnes Rattlesnake SL 2 Person Mountain GLO Tent.
