Weighing a mere 13.1 ounces, the Marmot Quasar Hoody and its 850 fill power goose down insulation deliver ultra-lightweight warmth for everything from backpacking to climbing to around town use.
Lightweight and highly compressible, the Marmot Men’s Quasar Hoody is a versatile piece for milder temperatures or layering in colder climates. Let’s have a look at its features.
Starting with the face fabric in the insulation of this jacket we have got a nice Pertex Quantum face fabric. It is a lightweight rip stop nylon. It is going to offer some really good durability without weighing you down. Inside that we have got an 850 fill down insulation. It is a goose down insulation, so it is highly compressible and has a very high warmth to weight ratio. So the jacket is super lightweight, but compresses down and offers really good warmth for its weight, so nice insulation in play on the Quasar Jacket there.
Now I should mention that this is a traditional down jacket, meaning that the down is not treated. So in the event that you are in any wet or, you know, nasty conditions, you will want to layer a waterproof or a weather proof shell over this guy, because if this jacket does take on water it is going to lose its insulation properties, but for drier climates or dry conditions it is a great layering piece. It is going to offer really good warmth.
Going through some of the features on this jacket, you have got a nice full length zipper in the front that comes up to a nice zipper garage. So it is going to offer some really good next to skin comfort. It is not going to chafe or rub against the neck at all there. It is a nice, comfortable garage at the top of the zipper. You have got a small chest pocket, napoleon style chest pocket to get some smaller items there quickly. You have got two zippered hand warmer pockets and they are nice sizable pockets. You can get your full hand in there. And I like these pockets because the down is actually on the outside, so it will actually help to keep your hands warm in the event that you are, you know, using those pockets, so nice features in the pockets there.
Around the cuffs we do have some elastic cuffs. There is no Velcro adjustment, but it is a nice elastic so it is going to stay tight to wrist and keep that warmth inside.
We do have two hem draw cords down at the bottom on the front of the jacket so you can really draw in that hem to, again, retain that warmth and keep the insulation where it is meant to be and also it prevents the jacket from riding up if you are wearing a backpack or a harness of some sort. We do have a full hood and it is a nice fitted hood with an elastic around the outside. It has also got a nice adjustment in the back of the hood so in the event that you need to, you can really cinch that down with the adjustment in the back of the hood, so nice full featured hood there on the Quasar.
Another neat feature about this jacket is that it will stuff down into its own pocket. So inside one of the pockets here we have got a two way zipper and you can just stuff that jacket inside out. It will get down to a nice pack size, maybe, a little travel pillow and it has also got a nice little attachment point there so you can clip it to a harness or to the outside of a backpack if you wanted to. So nice, compressible, lightweight option there.
And, again, this jacket is relatively loose fit. It has got Marmot’s angel wing movement so you get really good mobility in the shoulders and in the back of the jacket.
Now I am wearing a medium. It is a fairly regular fit jacket. It is not super tight. It is not super loose. It has got a good, nice roomy fit, good for layering underneath, or, like I said earlier, throwing a weather proof shell on top would be pretty easy with this jacket, so really good versatile layering piece.
And there you have it. It is the Marmot Men’s Quasar Hoody, an excellent piece for cooler climates, for layering in colder climates where you want warmth without being weighed down.
