Durable, highly breathable and water and wind resistant, the Patagonia Women's Simul Alpine Pants excel in alpine conditions and are perfect for cold weather activities like winter climbing, backpacking, snowshoeing and ski touring.
We are taking a closer look at the Women’s Patagonia Simul Alpine Pants. These are the perfect pants for alpine pursuits or winter backpacking, hiking, snowshoeing and even skiing where you want a very breathable pant that is going to move with you, but also provides wind resistance and a lot of stretch. We will get into all the features and take a close look at why these pants are so great.
The stand out feature of these pants is the fabric used. And Patagonia uses 100 percent polyester double weave stretch material. This does have a really great stretch. So taking a look at the different materials here the main body of these pants is that really stretchy material. And the way that they use the material on different parts of the pants is really smart. So here on the front it is really stretchy if I stretch it up and down. There is panels here on the back and on the side that are put on different angles so that it stretches and it moves with you on those alpine pursuits. So as you are hiking, as you are climbing you are not going to worry about these pants being restrictive.
They also have a pretty trim fit. And where that stretch is very important to have a trim fit that is close to your body so that you don't have any bulk in the pant, but also having a lot of stretch. And these pant definitely accomplish that.
These are a very feature rich pant, but it is not too many features that it is bulky or it is going to weigh you down. So just starting here at the top these do have a pretty high waist. So my hip bones are right here. These come up right to your hip bones. You can pull them up a little bit higher and that is really convenient when you are wearing a climbing harness. So these come up high enough that you are still comfortable with the harness on.
There is very, very durable belt loops. They go all the way around and you have a little bit of adjustability here in the belt loop. You can tighten this and make he pants a little bit tighter or looser. You could also wear a belt with them if you are not wearing a harness.
All of the small attachment points like the zippers, the zipper pulls, even the button here on the front are very, very durable. So perfect for alpine pursuits and things like that.
Moving down the pant, you have got two hand level pockets here. They are really comfortable. The inside of the pocket is very stretchy and it is a hidden pocket. So they are zippered. When you have these zipped up there is a flap that goes over that. So, again, wearing a harness it is going to be really streamlined and simple there. And there is a zippered pocket in the back that also has a flap over top of that zipper.
Down here on the side of the leg you have another zippered pocket which has a little bit of a bellow. So when you are wearing a harness this pocket is low enough that the leg straps of your harness aren’t going to interfere with that pocket, so a really great feature there. You do have a very, very stretchy material in the crotch of these pants. And that is a gusseted crotch. So you have a lot of durability there. The stitch lines on the inside are also really durable. So as you are moving and climbing those, you know, after years of use, those stitch lines aren’t going to break away. And, again, that material on the inside of the leg is more stretchy than the rest of the pant, so you have a lot of mobility there as well.
Moving down to the cuff of the pant, there is stretchy draw cord on the bottom of each cuff. And you actually have a little webbing loop on each side. And that is just for tie downs, for alpine footwear, something like that.
The fit of this pants is really great. As I mentioned before, they are very stretchy so that just makes them very comfortable. I am wearing a size six right now in Patagonia. And in some of other Patagonia pants I can wear a four. So these are a very trim fit. I prefer sizing up a little bit with pants of this style. So keep that in mind when choosing the size. But I have a little bit of room here with a size six that I could wear a light weight base layer. I am not wearing a lightweight base layer right now. But I do feel like I can move in these pants.
If I were to go down to the four, the size I normally wear, they would feel very tight.
All in all these are the perfect winter pants that are going to be able to handle anything you throw at them.
