With its waterproof/breathable construction, integrated high-activity vents, and comfortable softshell fabrication, the Outdoor Research Women’s Allout Hooded Jacket almost dares you to dream up a backcountry adventure that it can’t tackle.
The fully featured rain jacket that acts and feels like a lightweight soft shell, the Outdoor Research Women’s Allout Hooded Jacket is the perfect companion of alpine pursuits like skiing, climbing, mountaineering. It is completely waterproof and seam taped, so it would be a great option for backpacking. It breathes so it is going to breathe with you and it is extremely stretchy. So it is going to move with you as you move and not constrict your motion at all.
The first thing to talk about with any waterproof breathable jacket is the fabric and how it protects you from the elements. So this material here is 100 percent polyester, 50 denier fabric. It has got mechanical stretch so it is going to move with you and I ... that is the first thing that stood out to me about this jacket was it doesn’t look for feel like a shiny rain jacket. It doesn’t feel like you are wearing a plasticy material. This material is extremely stretchy. It is lightweight, but it also has a lot of abrasion resistance. So it would be a perfect climbing piece if you need just an extra layer that is going to protect you from the elements.
The features here on this jacket are simple. So it keeps the weight down. But the features are very useful. So the attention to detail here really stood out to me with this piece.
Starting with the full length zipper, you have got a storm flap behind this zipper. And it is a weatherproof zipper. So if water were to sneak its way in through that zipper you do have an extra little gutter under there that is going to protect you. It is a two way zipper so you can unzip the bottom of this jacket. If you are wearing a climbing harness or a back pack that has a hip belt strap, you can easily access that. You can also use this to vent and let warm air escape from the jacket.
You have got a stretchy draw cord that comes out of one side of the hem down here. So it is really easy to just cinch down. Again, if you are wearing a harness you can cinch down the bottom of the jacket. And the back of this jacket is a little bit lower, so you have a dropped hem there. It is not going to ride up on you when you don’t want it to.
Here on the cuffs you just have stretchy cuffs. They are really simple and they feel really nice. You don’t have adjustability with the cuff there, but it gets enough stretch that it is comfortable. And one thing that I really love about this jacket, instead of underarm zips in this piece, you have vents right herein the front. So you have got a vent here on either side of the chest. This is going to allow warm air to escape from your core. So the thing I really like about this is it is this piece is going to keep you really cool. When you have a zipper underneath of your arm that can get in the way. That can be irritating against your armpit there. So the vents here in the front, most of the time you are heating up right from your core anyway. So that air is going to escape really easily about of these vents. And then.
And then down below you have a nice hand level pocket. So there is a pocket here on both sides. It is a big, dump pocket. So you have stretchy mesh on the inside, really comfortable hand level pockets here, but, like I said, there is mesh on the inside. So you can use these pockets as vents as well. So the breathable material here is going to keep you nice and cool, but these added vents make a really big difference.
In addition to the hand level pockets on the outside, you have got pockets on the inside of this jacket as well. On one side here like I mentioned, this is a dump pocket on either side. So this would be a great place for gloves or something you just want to put in your pocket for a short period of time. Up here there is a media pocket. So it has got a small pass through there. If you are wearing headphones you can put your electronics in here and then wear ear buds. So a really nice pocket there. It is stretchy and all the pockets in her do have stretchy mesh. So you can really store gear inside those pockets really well.
In the fully featured hood you can cinch down both the cord around the top of your head and around the back. So if I put the hood on, it is a helmet compatible hood, so there is enough room under there to where a helmet, but you can cinch it down enough to just fit over your head if you are hiking or backpacking.
The cord on this side is really easy to use. You just have to cinch that down. And some-thing I really like about this is the extra cord is run through there and inside the jacket. So it is not flopping around. It is a really great feature there. And then around the back you have another point of adjustability. You can really cinch that in. So it is, again, with the stretchy material, the hood fits really well. You have got a wire brim here on the brim of the jacket. And so you can bend that and form that to whatever shape you like.
Although this jacket is lightweight and the features are streamlined and simple, all the attentions to detail make this a really comfortable piece for a variety of conditions. There isn’t an adventure you can throw at it that it won’t be able to tackle.
It is the Outdoor Research Women’s Allout Hooded Jacket.
