The warm, ultra-lightweight Outdoor Research Men's Cathode Hooded Jacket utilizes 20D Pertex Quantum fabric and PrimaLoft Gold insulation. Perfect for all colder weather adventures, the jacket packs down small to save valuable space in your pack.
Lightweight, warm and extremely packable, the Outdoor Research Men’s Cathode Jacket is a great option for layering in cold climates or stand alone in milder conditions. You could even use this as a lightweight jacket in colder climates during high aerobic activities. Let’s take a look at all of its features.
Starting with the face fabric we have got a Pertex Quantum 20 D face fabric. It is a nice lightweight fabric that is going to offer some good durability, but mostly it is packable, light weight and just really abrasion resistant. It has got that nice soft feel to it as well. On the inside we are using a Primaloft Gold synthetic insulation. It is the top of the line Primaloft insulation, one of the most compressible and most lightweight. It rebounds nicely as well, so you get that warmth and insulation over a long use, you know, the life of the jacket. It is synthetic insulation so it is highly water resistant, while maintaining its breathability. So this jacket can get wet and retain most of its insulating properties up to about 90 percent of its insulation remains when this jacket is wet. It dries out quickly and it still provides breathability if it gets wet as well. So nice features in with the Primaloft Gold insulation.
Going through the other features of this jacket, we do have a full zipper on the front with a storm flap behind there, so it just helps to keep the insulation, you know, throughout the entire jacket. It comes all the way up to a nice zipper garage at the top. So that will, you know, lay nicely next to the skin, not provide any really abrasions or any chafing on the neck or chin area. So nice zipper on the front of the jacket.
We do have a nice zippered chest pocket, a pretty small pocket there, nice and easy to access so you can get to things pretty quickly in the chest area there. And there are two zippered hand warmer pockets. So these are some nice pockets here. They are set a little higher up to accommodate for a harness or a waist belt of a backpack, so nice feature there. And, you know, decent size pockets to keep the hands nice and toasty warm.
On the inside of one of the pockets we do have a kind of double sided zipper. So this jacket will stuff into itself, create a nice, packable size. It has also got a little tab there to hang on a harness or on the exterior of something if you choose to, but nice feature, you know, self stowing pocket on the jacket.
At the bottom we do have a hem draw cord on one side, so you can just cinch that down in the event that you are wearing a harness, again, or a backpack and really make sure the jacket doesn’t ride up on you.
We do have two elastic cuffs around the wrists there, so they are just going to help to trap that heat without being restrictive and really maintain the insulation well.
And, finally, up at the hood we have got nice fitted hood with some of this stretch fabric here and that comes up pretty nicely so nice elastic around the hood. You know, it has got a single point of adjustability in the back so you can cinch that hood down if you need to and make it nice and snug, but, again, a pretty fit hood, not necessarily a helmet compatible hood, though you may be able to layer a helmet on the top of it.
And on the inside of the jacket we have got two internal pockets, one on either side, pretty sizable pockets. So they are nice there to keep some things on the inside that you may want to have closer to the body, so two nice pockets there. And also some stretch fabric under the arms. It is a shoulder stretch fabric, so it is a really nice, durable and breathable stretchy material, you know, adding to the insulation which is body mapped insulation. It provides really good mobility and insulating properties to the jacket, so really nice features all around on the jacket.
This jacket does have a fairly trim fit. You know, it is a fitted piece. It is meant to be a layering piece so it is going to go close to the skin, close to the body. I could see layering very minimally underneath, like a lightweight base layer, but not too much more. Layering on top of this jacket would be incredibly easy, whether it be a soft shell, a hard shell or some other types of layers. Because of its low profile and really compressible insulation, you would be able to really, really well with this jacket.
I am wearing a medium. I do normally wear mediums in most of my outerwear and it is a pretty trim, snug fit. So, you know, nice fit. It is stretchy. It is movable, but pretty trim.
And there you have it. For ultra light warmth for those cold climates or those milder conditions, the Outdoor Research Men’s Cathode Jacket is an excellent layering option.
