Details

The fully featured Outdoor Research Alpine Bivy provides backpackers with a snug, secure sleeping space and provides weather protection beneath a canopy of innovative, breathable Gore-Tex Respiration+ fabric. Though not for everyone, this minimalist shelter allows backpackers to greatly reduce packed weight while still ensuring a dry, wind protected night outdoors.

Measuring 84 in. long and 26 in. wide at the head, tapering to 19 in. wide at the feet, the Alpine Bivy is large enough to accommodate most sleeping bags and accompanying standard sleeping pads. An integrated shock-corded Delrin pole runs over the top of the bag, keeping material off of your face and providing 20 in. of headroom while you are lying flat on your back. When not needed, the Delrin pole can be left at home, shaving an additional 2 ounces off of the 2 pound packed weight of the Alpine Bivy. Extra volume is built into the foot section of the Alpine Bivy to provide a little wiggle room and increase livability.

Gore-Tex's amazing Respiration+ fabric offers durable, waterproof, windproof protection while allowing air to circulate, ensuring that you can breathe easily and avoid condensation build-up. No-see-um netting at the opening of the Alpine Bivy allows you to peel back the Gore-Tex to view the stars on clear nights and allow completely unimpeded airflow. The nylon floor of the Alpine Bivy has a Hydroseal coating for full waterproof protection. Fully taped seams provide further assurance that moisture remains outside of the Alpine Bivy.

  • Three-layer GORE-TEX Respiration+ fabric.
  • Durable Hydroseal coated waterproof nylon floor.
  • Fully taped seams.
  • Single overhead shock-corded Delrin pole.
  • No-see-um mesh netting at opening.
  • End-opening zipper with wide storm flap.
  • Sleeping pad straps.
  • Five stake loops and one guy line loop (stakes and guy line sold separately).
  • High-volume foot section.
  • Small internal mesh pocket.

Likes: lightweight and packable

Dislikes: too much condensation to be practical

The Outdoor Research Apline Bivy is an amazing shelter when it comes to packability, weight, durability, and comfort. The entire Bivy easily fits into an OR waterproof 5L stuff sack, which is fairly small. It was my first Bivy sack, so I enjoyed the sub 2

Likes: Small packable size 5L roughly
Under 2lbs
Gore-Tex shell
Can be set up in small areas where tents will not fit
Very durable material

Dislikes: Not for very claustrophobic people
The pole is somewhat flimsy
It is difficult to role back the Gore-Tex face covering in order to see the stars at night. It always finds a way to fall back over the mesh face guard.
The mesh does touch your face when sleeping, which is not convenient

Likes: OR Alpine Bivy worked as advertised. I used it the first night I received it. Sleeping outdoors with sleeping bag and pad. It was comfortable, plenty of room. It held up well against rain, and I was plenty warm. For a bivy, there was ample space around the upper body. I'll be taking this on two to three day trips for sure.

Dislikes: Not the lightest bivy sack, but lighter than my backpacking tent.
