The sleek, high performance, Osprey Poco Plus framed child carrier is equally at home on your daily adventures or on backcountry hikes. It draws upon Osprey’s long and successful history in backpack design to ensure that mom or dad have a comfortable fit and the child also has a safe and comfortable ride. Let’s take a closer look at its many features.
I wish the Poco Plus existed when my children were younger, but at six and eight years old they are both a little too big at this point to ride in the Poco Plus. They did let me borrow one of their teddy bears.
It is worth noting that while there is not a specific age range for a child who can ride in the Poco Plus, a child must be able to hold its own head upright. As far as the max weight is concerned, the Poco Plus is capable of carrying up to 48.5 pounds, but that would include the weight of the pack itself, the contents of the pack, anything you are carrying and, obviously, the child. So those are kind of your bookends on deciding if your child is ready to ride in the Poco Plus or has outgrown the carrier.
Before we talk about the safety features, I do want to touch on the suspension system, the way this carries for the wearer of the pack. What Osprey has done here is a huge step up from what you would find on child carriers on our average department store shelf. So you have got excellent padding here on the contoured shoulder straps, excellent padding on the hip belt. There is a adjustability on the hip belt that allows you to extend the range of that padding. So as you are swapping the child carrier between mom, dad, whomever, you can really adjust that fit to make sure it is comfortable for whomever is wearing that.
There is a suspended mesh back panel that allows for ventilation and carrying comfort there. The entire suspension or shoulder harness can lift and raise a range of six inches, which, again, is going to allow it to comfortably accommodate just about anyone who might be wearing this. It is easy to make those changes, easy to dial in that comfort with load lifter straps, an adjustable sliding sternum strap and other adjustment points.
Moving away from the suspension system and starting to talk about the safety features for your child, let’s start by mentioning the fact that there is a powder coated aluminum frame with injection molded hinges. So it is kind of out of view here on the carrier, but it is what is giving it its stability here.
Obviously the child carrier can stand on its own and can stand on its own very safely, which is important, obviously. You want to be able to put that child carrier on the ground and know that it is sturdy and stable. It is not a chair, by any means, for the child, but it should be stable in a way that you know you can safely get your child in.
Those injection molded hinges allow this to very easily collapse when you want it to, when you are ready to. So for ease of storage and transport when you are not carrying the child, it really does pack down to a more compact size. But that injecting molding makes sure it holds its shape when you need it to.
There is an integrated height adjustable seat for your child, five point safety harness in here. They are not going anywhere. And with the padding that you have got in play here, not only are they not going anywhere, they are going to be very comfortable while they are riding in that seat.
My teddy bear’s legs are a little stubby so he is not taking full advantage of the height adjustable stirrups, one on either side. So long hikes, your child’s legs are kind of dangling in the seat otherwise. That really helps to kind of maintain that position and keeps their little legs from basically going to sleep. None of us like that feeling. Those stirrups are there to keep that from happening, so really thoughtful feature there from Osprey.
Again, keep in mind this is height adjustable. Lots of points of adjustment there. So a your child is growing, but before he our she have outgrown of the Poco Plus you can make those fine tuned adjustments so that your child remains comfortable, happy inside the Poco Plus so that you can keep on getting out there like you want to and hopefully instill that same love of adventure and the outdoors in your child.
There are a couple of other interesting features I want to call out here as far as the child is concerned. You think of tired little heads. You know, over the course of a long day they may want to put their heads forward, rest their heads or, depending on how you are moving, even kind of move forward a little bit. It is nice to know you have got some integrated padding and cushioning here on the part of Osprey.
This is a soft textured drool pad, so especially in the case of infants it is going to get a little messy over time. Osprey has made that a fully removable and washable piece. So some nice confidence there that you can keep that clean and keep that, you know, that comfort in place for your child.
Another great feature to call out is the fact that Osprey has included an integrated sun cover. So pulls out of its own dedicated pocket and clips into place over top of your child’s head. So in bright sun, certainly you want some further protection for your child, but keep in mind their younger skin is also more vulnerable to UV rays. So even on those days where you may not be noticing any effects to your own skin, it is definitely worth keeping that direct sun off of your sensitive child. So some real nice protection there, also some glare protection for them. You are out in bright sun. You have got your sunglasses on, you have got your hat on, here is a little bit of extra protection for your son or daughter.
Understanding that there could be all kinds of supplies and gear that you want or need to carry on your adventures, Osprey has not skimped on the storage or the organization. So you have got over 1400 cubic inches of storage capacity here on the Poco Plus and pockets galore on the shoulder harness, on the hip belt. You have got stretch pockets here low on the side and also on the support wings high on the pack itself. On the back you have got a very large stretch mesh pocket there. You have got a zippered storage pocket up high on the carrier and then you have got an extremely large storage compartment down below. So zippered enclosure, perfect for diapers, for clothes, for other supplies that you may very well want to carry with you n the Poco Plus.
Also got these very handy haul handles sewn right into the pack, so it makes it really easy, helpful when you are putting it on, when you are taking it off, when you are setting it down, lifting it back up to handle the Poco Plus and always keeping your child safe and balanced.
So much to love on the Osprey Poco Plus. As the wearer of the pack you know you are going to be comfortable. You have got all the storage you need for anything and every-thing you might want to carry with you. Best of all, you know that your child is going to be safe. You know that your child is going to be comfortable and that he or she can come along with you while you go about your daily activities or venture out into the backcountry into the nature you love.
