A versatile travel piece, the Osprey Meridian 28 wheeled convertible pack has integrated wheels, a retractable handle, its very own hide-away suspension system and a removable, functional day pack!
The Osprey Meridian 28 travel pack is the perfect luggage piece that allows you to roll or carry the pack in a lot of different ways. The first thing that stood out to me about this pack was it has got a lot of features that offer a lot of versatility. You can us it in many, many different ways. You have got a day pack here on the front that is completely re-movable. When it is attached to the rest of the luggage it is seamless, it is a very cohesive unit. And looking at all the other features, you have got really durable wheels. So you are able to roll this behind you, but it has got backpack straps and a very supportive suspension system which allows you to carry it on your back if you need to. You have got carry handles as well, so this is just a really versatile, easy to use, streamlined and simple pack that would be great for any travel adventure.
The first thing to talk about with any piece of luggage or any backpack is how it carries the load and how you can get it from point A to point B. So, as I said, there is a couple of different ways to use it. I am going to turn it around just to take a look at those.
So this is not carry-on size. It is definitely a checked baggage. It is 28 inches tall, which is where the 28 comes from in the naming. And, as you can see, it can stand up by itself. So you have got a really durable frame, a very durable chassis down here where you know that it is going to hold up to a lot of use and abuse. You have got really durable wheels here. They are polyurethane wheels. They have got some traction on them and they are very tall. They are taller than some other travel luggage that I have seen and so you can definitely take this on different types of terrain and not worry about that durability.
The way this is shaped gives you a curved back panel. And behind this panel you actually have a full suspension system. So you have a shoulder harness. You have a very comfort-able hip belt that is adjustable and it is very, very comfortable. And unlike some other luggage that I have seen that is very boxy, you can convert it into a back pack and it just doesn't feel comfortable when you are wearing it, when you have this loaded up, it is definitely comfortable. It carries the weight really well for a piece of luggage and it has got that quality and that comfort you can expect from Osprey.
You have a roll handle here that has got two adjustment points. You can have it at a low-er or a higher point. And obviously you can tuck it away completely. When I am wearing the pack I don't feel like any of this part is infringing on the space on the back of my head, so that just makes it a lot more comfortable and we will take a look at the suspension system.
If I pull down this panel you can see the suspension system is tucked away back here. And the way this is designed is really, really smart. If you do check this baggage you can just pull that panel up. All of these straps are protected. They are not going to get caught as you are traveling. And everything tucks away really well. So, as you can see, you have a shoulder harness here, a really contoured, padded shoulder straps. You have even got load lifter straps and a sternum strap that is adjustable.
Down here on the hip belt, if I pull that out you have a lot of adjustability with the pack. And this hip belt comes out. So this panel tucks away completely.
If I go down to the hip belt, there are two buckles on the bottom and those buckles attach underneath of the pack and have a very secure, tight hold. So if you are using it as a back pack, you can adjust this torso length up and down, a really great feature so you can dial in the fit. And the padding on the hip belt is also really nice. So you have got contoured hip belt. You have got padding there and you also have spacer mesh behind that padding. You have got a mesh back panel here. So if it is in warmer temperatures it is going to keep you nice and comfortable.
I am going to turn the pack around and talk about talk about some of the other features. Again, a nice carry handle on the top, and a big, burly carry handle on the side. You also have a spot on the bottom of the pack where you can really get a hold of it.
If I flip this down to talk about the luggage there, you do have a removable day pack that is on top. I want to call that out. There is a nice red toggle there and you can unzip this completely. There is also three buckles. So this really attaches to the pack seamlessly. It doesn't’ look like you have two separate pieces here. It looks like you have got one cohesive pack. It is really easy to remove.
So if I take that off of there you can definitely use this by itself. You can just clip those together. If you don’t need that extra day pack, you are going on shorter trip, you can use that by itself. If you are on a longer trip and you need the extra space, this is a great day trip pack. So just taking it out for the day, it has got a lot of pockets and storage in here. So I am going to go through and call those out.
On the front there is just a small pocket for essentials. I have got my wallet, my keys, some electronics in here. There is even a little clip that allows you to keep your keys close at hand. The main pack body here has a lot of really convenient organizational features. If I flip that open, you can see I have got cell phone in there. There is a nice flat pocket behind that where you can store a tablet. So I have just got a light weight small tablet in there. It fits really well in that pocket. There is a zipper pocket behind there. It is pretty short, so I have just a small notebook in there. That is about all that fits in that pocket, but behind that you can have a laptop. The laptop sleeve fits up to a laptop that is about 15 and a half inches or smaller. So it doesn’t fit all laptops, but definitely a big enough pocket there. You could put a notebook of anything else in there, so lots of really convenient storage with that removable day pack.
If I flip that round we have got really contoured and comfortable straps. So you could definitely use this all day long. You could even put a hydration system in there if you want.
I put the day pack to the side and just to show the main compartment here. So the big story with this pack is you have got a big open luggage area and it allows you to organize your gear in the way that you want. So, in my opinion, Osprey gave just enough features, but they didn't put too many features in there. They didn’t overbuild it. Sometimes that can be cumbersome when you have small pockets that you don’t know what to do with.
So if I open the main compartment here you can see that big U shaped zipper allows you access into the whole pocket. One big pocket here. I have got enough room. I have got a sleeping bag here, some shoes. If I peel those back, I have got some clothing. And what I really like about this main compartment is you have compression straps on the top and on the bottom. I have got a sleeping bag there, so I can really compress that down if I wanted to. It allows you a lot of versatility here. And there is even some fabric here that gives it some compression wings. So you can compress that gear down, store gear on the sides as well. So it allows you to organize the way you like.
There is a long zipper up here that you can get some small items and then a mesh pocket on this side. On this top panel there is two separate pockets, one mesh pocket. I have just got a small layer in there. And then another concealed pocket underneath.
With all the features you get here, you can carry it, you can roll it in different ways. Os-prey really pulled out all the stops with this travel piece. You have got a separate day pack that is definitely worthy of its own load. You can use this by itself without the pack and with all the features it is going to be perfect for your next travel adventure.
It is the Osprey Meridian 28.
