Ideal for long day hikes or lightweight overnighters, the Osprey Kestrel 48 balances weight, storage capacity (2800+ cubic inches), features, price and performance. A lightweight, supportive suspension enables the Kestrel 48 to comfortably carry loads of up to 40 pounds!
Employing ridge molded foam and built-in air channels, the Kestrel 48's AirScape backpanel provides flexible support and breathability to combat heat build-up between your back and the pack body. A lightweight aluminum peripheral frame and a foam framesheet effectively distribute weight and deliver supportive stability. The Small/Medium Kestrel 48 is designed to fit torso lengths ranging from 16"-20" and the Medium/Large size fits 19”-23” torsos. The padded, contoured hipbelt, and padded shoulder straps aid in stability and load transfer. An adjustable sternum strap and load-lifter straps further enhance fit. Side compression straps cinch down to keep the contents of the pack safely in.
The top-loading 2800+ cubic-inch capacity packbag is accessed beneath a fixed top lid that incorporates zippered compartments for gear storage. A vertical zipper on the face of the pack also grants access to the interior of the packbag without having to remove the lid. A zippered lower compartment is ideal for a sleeping bag or other gear. A divider between the main packbag and the sleeping bag compartment can be pulled aside to convert the Kestrel 48 to a single large compartment. A large zippered side pocket and a large stretch woven pocket on the front of the pack offer additional organizational options and help to keep layers close at hand.
Other features include Stow-on-the-Go trekking pole attachments, tuck-away ice axe loops, daisy chain attachment points, an included raincover, a safety whistle built into the sternum strap, zippered hibpelt pockets, and stretch side water bottle pockets. An external sleeve is ideal for a hydration system (not included).

Real Customer Reviews
- Great pack!
Likes: Good size pack for two day trips.
- Love this pack over all
Likes: External bladder sleeve, lots of access to main compartment, rain fly included, tracking pole loops in front, lots of storage in the brain, compression straps everywhere, adjustable straps.
Dislikes: Zippers on hip pockets are a pain, mesh side pockets too small for a water bottle when pack is full .
- Very well made. Light, comfortable, has everything I need for a weekend trip.
Likes: Rain fly, trekking pole holder, side compartment, front mesh pocket.
- Awesome pack!
Likes: The Kestrel 48 had everything I was looking for in a pack. Excellent build quality, a sleeping bag compartment, rain fly, compression straps, and sleeping pad straps. I haven't given it a thorough test while backpacking yet, but I can already tell it's gonna be able to withstand everything I can throw at it!
Dislikes: No major dislikes, but the sleeping pad compartment is on the small side.
- What I was hoping for
Likes: Exactly as described. I love the convenience of the side zipper to the main compartment!
- Great design, but not for me
Likes: I love all the options Osprey gives you, but I was interested in a more streamlined pack. Though, this pack did the job on my first few backpacking trips.
Dislikes: Weight, stiff back and straps, hydration section (located on the outside of the bag, very hard to pack when bag is already packed)
Likes: Great materials, comfortable, well made, easy to adjust, side zipper is very convenient, good external storage features, transfers weight to hips well, great compression straps.
Dislikes: I like the hipbelt overall, especially the way it tightens towards the center but I would have liked the pockets to be slighlty bigger and they seem to sit farther back on my hips making it slightly awkward to access them.
