Catering to adventurers who are looking for lightweight, value-packed versatility, the Osprey Farpoint 40 offers travel-friendly features in a trek-worthy backpack. The pack delivers load-carrying capability and ample storage capacity (2300+ cubic inches) in a carry-on approved size.
Constantly striving to enhance comfort and performance, Osprey has equipped the pack with a fully-featured suspension system. In expectation of comfortably carrying loads of up to 40 pounds, the Farpoint 40 employs a LightWire frame and a spacer mesh backpanel to grant strength, stability and load transfer. Further enhancing fit, the padded hipbelt utilizes an ErgoPull closure that draws tension along the top and the bottom of the belt. A sliding sternum strap and load-lifter straps allow you to fine-tune fit with on-the-go adjustments. The Small/Medium Farpoint 40 accommodates torsos ranging from 15”-19" in length while a Medium/Large size fits 18”-22” length torsos. Whether loading the pack in an overhead compartment or checking it at the airport or the train station, you can safely tuck the harness and hipbelt behind an integrated zippered security panel to ensure that your pack stows safely.
The main packbag is accessed by a wide-opening front panel zipper. A large, zippered mesh pocket on the inside of the front panel is ideal for separating and organizing clothes and gear. Internal compression straps allow you to safely secure contents. Stretch-woven front pockets keep water bottles and other gear close at hand and an internal sleeve protectively stows a laptop or tablet. The Osprey Farpoint 40 convertible travel pack/carry-on is available in your choice of color and size options.

Real Customer Reviews
- Iightweight, efficient, comfortable carry-on pack
Likes: This pack is easy to pack efficiently, and contains a number of pockets for separating out items that need easy access. It is extremely lightweight and comfortable, and can be worn as a backpack, or carried by either a shoulder strap or a handle on the top or side. A surprising amount of gear fits into this carry-on sized pack, at least a week's worth. It's the best pack in this size that I've owned.
Dislikes: Zipper can be slightly fussy.
- Although I haven't used this yet it appears to be very durable. It did arrive on time as promised
- Exchanging for the M/L
Likes: I love this bag. The large compartment opens wide and is easy to pack with my packing cubes. The laptop sleeve has a velcro tab to keep your computer from sliding out which is nice. I also love that the bag has a frame that keeps it's shape.
Dislikes: I got the S/M version because I am in between sizes and that was the recommendation. However, I wasn't able to adjust the straps comfortably to fit my torso. When they were adjusted all the way out, the sternum strap was up near my neck. I love the bag so I'm returning for a M/L. Hopefully it will have a better fit for me.
- Great pack
Likes: I like the "suit case" unzip. I do not have to pack it in like a sack.
Dislikes: So far I have no dislikes.
- Excellent bag for Europe trip
Likes: Carry on bag, comfortable, design, and carry options
Dislikes: More organization should make better carry on bag for travel
- Awesome travel backpack!
Likes: What I really love about this bag is the shoulder and hip straps. also i like using this backpack as daily use
Dislikes: i cannot dislike this osprey farpoint 40 backpack
- I love this case. It's perfect for short trips.
Likes: The economy of size and flexibility of checking or carrying on an airplane.
- Solid backpack, even better customer service.
Likes: It definitely works as a carry on - even on my domestic flights with in Chile. At the same time, it was super convenient that I was able to stow away the harness when I chose to check my bag. I also really like that the bag zips down all the way and front loads. There's plenty of space.
I really like the handles on both the top and the side - makes it easy to load into buses/vans etc.
The customer service at Backcountry Edge is fantastic. I sent my M/L back for a S/M (18 inch torso = between sizes, I'd suggest sizing down) and I had my replacement within 4/5 days of sending the original pack. I don't think I've every had anything exchanged so quickly. Great job!
Dislikes: I wish there were hip belt pockets for a phone/keys.
- Best Carry On Backpack For The Money!
Likes: I did a lot of research before choosing this bag and I've got to say it lived up to everything I'd read about it. I like to go on vacation and only take one carry on size piece of luggage with me and this has to be the perfect bag for the money, it's a great all rounder. I am 6ft tall and 200lbs so went with the M/L version and it fits perfectly and spreads the weight evenly. The shoulder straps are comfy and have load lifters. The sternum strap is adjustable and has a whistle integrated. The hip belt is really well padded and takes the weight off your back making hauling your load comfortable. This bag also comes with a should strap so you can carry it like a duffle.
I also really like the way you cover up the back pack straps if you did want to check the bag or just store it. The main compartment is huge and once you compress your clothes with the internal compression straps you are left with a lot of room around the edge of the bag for things like your wash kit, electronics pouch etc. When I pack I use medium packing cubes in the Farpoint. The large ones are too big but you can easily get 4 medium packing cubes stuffed to capacity in the main compartment and have plenty of room left around the edges. The front pocket easily fits my 15" Macbook Pro and has lots of other organizational pockets for everything you could possibly need. The top pocket comes in handy for those items you need to grab quickly like headphones, passport etc. There are also two mesh pockets on the front. All in all this really is the best one bag solution around the $150 price point that I found. Plus Ospreys guarantee is awesome! I bought the Caribbean Blue version of this bag and it's a nice light blue true to the color on the Osprey site.
Dislikes: While this bag is nearly perfect there are a few things I would change. Ideally I'd like the laptop closer to my back and for the two mesh pockets to be more useful. Also would be cool if the hip belt pads had a little pocket.
