The MSR SweetWater Purifier System combines the advantages of a purifier and a filter into one system for added viral protection in popular wilderness areas and developing countries, or anywhere with considerable human activity.
The system consists of the MSR SweetWater Microfilter, which protects against protozoa and bacteria, the chlorine-based MSR SweetWater Purifier Solution for additional protection against viruses, a Universal Bottle Adapter that allows the microfilter to work with a number of different water containers and a cleaning brush. With this system, you can pump 1+ liters of water per minute, add the SweetWater Purifier Solution, wait 5 minutes, and you're left with microbiologically safe, good-tasting water.
When used according to the instructions, the SweetWater Purifier System inactivates 99.99% of waterborne viruses; and eliminates over 99.9999% of all waterborne bacteria and 99.9% of common protozoan parasites, such as giardia and cryptosporidia, as well as particulates, bad tastes, and odors.
The SweetWater Microfilter pumps on both the up and down strokes. The cleanable, granular activated carbon filter is good for up to 750 liters of water before replacement. At only 14 oz., the system is lightweight and the microfilter unit measures 7.5 in. x 2 in.
- Iodine-free: Inactivates viruses without bad-tasting iodine.
- Fast: Pump at a fast flow rate of 1.25 liters per minute, then add five drops of the purifier solution per liter and wait five minutes for optimal protection.
- Easy to Use: Lever-action pump handle has a 4-to-1 mechanical advantage and dual pump action, so you don't have to work as hard.
- Lightweight: Entire system weighs just 14 ounces.
- Compact: Handle folds flat when not in use for easy packing and storage.
Real Customer Reviews
- Easy to use
- Damn fine tool
Likes: Easy to use. Intuitive. Relatively inexpensive. Good size (small).
Dislikes: Intake hose could be longer. Pump handle locking pin is finicky. However, I suspect my lack of experience contributes to both problems.
- Pump up the jam
Likes: I just bought this water filter and used it last weekend on my backpacking trip. I was really impressed on how fast it could filter 1000 ml of water into my bottle. I love that it came with a bottle topper that hooked into the hose. So far I've only used it for water in a winter run off stream so I didn't need to use the drops. I'm interested to see what the drops taste like...maybe next trip with a limited water source. It was easy to use and it packs fairly light.

- Good quality filter
Likes: A friend had this filter on my last backpacking trip, I liked it so much I decided to get one.
It is very easy to use and filters a liter of water in a little over a minute. Not a whole lot to say about a water filter but this one seems to work well and my friend has had it for years so it seems to last. The new one looks just like the one my friend had so I think that it will work great for me.
- Great filter
Likes: Easy assembly/easy to use
Dislikes: Hoses can be difficult to separate from product
Likes: The MSR SweetWater is easier to use than other filters I've owned and the water tasted good even when using the purifier solution. It didn't leave the water tasting like iodine. The fill cap fits my Nalgene bottles perfectly. I keep the outlet hose in a ziploc bag to keep it from getting contaminated while in my pack.
Likes: It was shipped very quickly. The product itself works very well-exactly as described. A couple of liters pumped in 5 minutes or so, into multiple bottles.
Dislikes: The "clean water" tube and the "dirty water" tube are stored by wrapping around the body of the filter (together!). There is a potential for cross contamination of the hoses, introducing bacteria into the system. I made my own storage to keep them separate and store the "clean" tube away from the dirty tube. This should be standard with this product. IMO
Likes: Works as advertised, light and packs small. I don't have to carry a bunch of bottled water any more. Super fast shipping...
Likes: Originally bought one of these a couple years ago and was so impressed with it that I bought another one for my son for when we go up in the mountains camping. It has worked wonderfully without any worries at all. Its pump flow per liter is slower than other brands, but that to me is a good thing because it is filtering more thoroughly at 0.2 microns in a ceramic/charcoal filter rather than the 0.3 micron fiber/paper filter typically used in other microfilters. I highly recommend this product to anyone that spends any time outdoors and likes to pack light without the added weight of carrying water. It
Likes: Lightweight easy to use pump.
