In a world that expects liquid-fuel stoves to have one setting (hot), the MSR DragonFly stands out. Since its debut in 1998, it has won numerous awards for its innovative CoolFuel dual-valve design, which offers an unrivaled range of continuous and immediate flame control. Simmer a delicate sauce over a candle flame or melt snow quickly over a blowtorch with a twist of the flame adjuster.

The compact design fits into a 2-liter MSR pot, while the super-wide pot supports provide excellent stability. The DragonFly's wide, stable platform and unmatched flame control make it the stove of choice for the backcountry gourmet.

The DragonFly comes with a pre-installed DG jet to burn white gas or unleaded auto gas, and with a simple change to the included DK jet the DragonFly will also burn kerosene, jet fuel and diesel fuel.

The DragonFly comes equipped with MSR's self-cleaning Shaker Jet. In liquid-fuel stoves, the jet controls the rate of fuel flow into the stove's Mixer Tube, but for this to happen, the opening of the jet must be extremely small. Unvaporized and solidified fuel particles can wreak havoc on such a small gateway, but MSR's Shaker Jet solves this dilemma. A weighted needle nests inside the jet and when the stove is on, fuel will flow around this needle. When the stove is not in use, this needle will push any debris through the jet's opening with a simple shake--thus the "Shaker Jet" name.

The DragonFly includes the stove, fuel pump, windscreen, heat reflector, small parts kit, stuff sack and instructions. The Fuel bottle is sold separately.

  • CoolFuel Valve: First ever dual-valve design offers an unrivaled range of flame control - simmer to boil with a twist of the flame adjuster.
  • Extra Wide Pot Supports: Three wide pot supports hold larger pots or fry pans for gourmet cooking.
  • Multi-Fuel: Burns white gas, kerosene and unleaded auto fuel.
  • Compact: Folds to 1/3 of its working size for easy storage.
  • Remote Burner: Pioneered by MSR, the separate fuel bottle and pump keep the flame away from the fuel, which allows the use of a windscreen to make the stove burn hotter and more efficiently.
  • Self-Cleaning Shaker Jet: Clean out jet debris for high performance with a flick of the wrist.
  • Suspended Burner Cup: The suspended burner cup enables the stove to burn hot and strong while reducing heat lost to the ground.

Easy to use, nice and light

Likes: Easy startup, multiple fuels, packs up well

Dislikes: The gas line could be a bit more flexible, but I think it will be after some more use.

Likes: Included wind screen and heat reflector and field maintenance kit. Simmer control.

Dislikes: After using it a few times I've gotten better at priming it but I'm still not sure what is meant by a half spoon of fuel.

Works great for motorcycle camping

Likes: Easily packs up. Love simmering control. Heats fast. Very fuel efficient.

Dislikes: The span across the supports works with big pots but will not support small cups or Stanley narrow cook sets. I made my own stand for support. Minor issue.

Love the versatility

Likes: Being able to use different fuels is a huge plus, from unleaded gasoline, to diesel, to jet fuel, to white gas (camp fuel) just by swapping out a jet. It's compact, lightweight and presents a nice stable surface for any pot I'd likely carry, fits into its sack nicely doesn't take up much room in the pack. Nice too to be able to get every last bit of fuel out by pumping to maintain the pressure. While I boil more water than anything else, it's nice to cook on a low setting and not worry about turning the inside of my pot into a meteorite!

Dislikes: It's on the noisy side even at low flame, but that's the only negative I have!

Likes: Compact, very efficient and works great. It also uses multi fuel and works in high altitudes better than propane stoves. You can also simmer with this stove and can't with many others

Dislikes: Its loud

Great stove!

Likes: When I started looking for a backpacking stove, I was very surprised to find most are not adjustable. They have two modes, off and blowtorch. This is easily adjustable. Well-made.

Dislikes: Uses a different pump from standard MSR stoves. I’d like a hard case for it.

A versatile cooking stove for more invested backpackers, hikers, etc.

Likes: reliable and versatile stove. The flame can be adjusted which means it can be used in different ways. Other reviews can explain it better, but this is a nice feature if you plan to do other things beside boil water. If your only need is to boil water for dehydrated food or water, do not buy this stove. This stove requires a couple minutes of prep which can be a bit nagging, though I don't mind it since it is a beast of a stove and I probably will never have to buy another. You need to properly pump the cylinder and prime the stove with a minute or two burn before you are ripping at steady blue flame. I bought this stove because there's nothing I hate more than the unstable legs and support of other stoves. So I can put multiple size pans and pots on this stove without a problem.

There's a reason this is considered one of the best stoves out there.

Dislikes: The stove is loud—it is what it is. Did not affect my rating.

Likes: Awesome stove, I love that it can burn diesel fuel... Seems like it will last me for years to come.

Dislikes: None at the moment, we will see once I field test it.

Reviewed by Anton A. - November 23, 2012

Likes: it has the simmer option for slow cooking, large surface area to cook on, reliable

Dislikes: noisy, bulky and heavy than some other stoves

Reviewed by Corrie P. - July 12, 2012

Likes: The stove worked great. We used it for 2 breakfasts and 3 nights in Isle Royal NP and it is very efficient (1/3 of a fuel bottle used). Its not the quietest stove that I have ever seen but it is not loud enough that it is distracting.

Dislikes: No Problems
