The rugged Mountainsmith Apex 80 internal frame backpack offers 4820 cubic inches of storage space. Load-carrying capability and organizational features combine to make the pack an ideal option for multi-day or extended backpacking trips.
Utilizing a PE framesheet and X-shaped aluminum support stays and a fully adjustable suspension, the Apex 80 is designed to comfortably haul heavy loads by efficiently distributing weight, providing better load control, and increasing flexibility. A channeled backpanel padded with perforated foam allows air to circulate, keeping your back cool and dry while in the backcountry. Fit is adjustable to accommodate torsos ranging from 17"-22" in length. A dual density waistbelt supports weight and provides cushioning while conforming to the contours of your hips. Adjustable shoulder straps, load-lifter straps, and an adjustable sternum strap further enhance fit and comfort. Side and bottom compression straps allow you to cinch down your load for better stability and maneuverability.
The large top-accessed packbag of the Apex 80 offers a standard capacity of 4270 cubic inches and an integrated spindrift collars expands usable capacity to a full 4820 cubic inches when extra space is needed. The height of the lid can be adjusted to accommodate the expanded collar. The lid can even be detached entirely for use as a lumbar pack or shoulder sling. A separate sleeping bag compartment can be accessed through a zipper on the front of the packbag. This compartment is separated from the main packbag by an internal divider that can be unzipped to convert the interior of the Apex 80 to a single, oversized compartment. A large front stretch pocket allows you to keep extra layers or other gear at the ready.
Other features on the Apex 80 include trekking pole mounts, ice axe loops, side stretch mesh pocket, smartphone-compatible waistbelt pockets, and various gear attachment points. An internal lined pocket and drinking tube exit port make the pack hydration system (sold separately) compatible.

Real Customer Reviews
- Overall great pack with a few things that could be improved
Likes: This pack is absolutely huge, I compared it to another 80 my roommate uses and it easily fit his full load without even cresting the top.
The frame is one of the most comfortable I've used. I took the pack out with 57 Lbs. of gear (I carry for two) on a three day trip and experienced minimal fatigue. The adjustable shoulder yolk has settings for any size of person.
The pack has plenty of external storage the mesh pocket, water bottle pockets are huge and it includes bottom straps for ISO storage or tent poles.
The material is tough.
Dislikes: I noticed a small amount of strap drift, this is not entirely unexpected considering the load I was hauling but it was noticeable.
When the pack is filled to capacity the Map flap (top pouch) doesn't fit well over the drawstring top. That being said good luck filling it to capacity.
I know that most hydration systems are tall and skinny but I wish they made the internal pouch a little bigger so I could fit my camelback 3L they have plenty of space and it would still hold smaller bladders.
I don't like the placement of the cinch straps the didn't really have all that much of an affect on the pack size or feel.
