A unique, shape-shifting rainfly lets you decide how the Mountain Hardwear Shifter 3 tent can serve you best. With 2 doors, a roomy interior, and watertight construction, it’s a great option for backpacking or camping. Footprint included.
The Mountain Hardwear Shifter Three Person Tent is a great option for camping or backpacking when you are looking for a tent that provides sprawling room, has got a lot of attentions to detail, but comes in at a low weight.
The stand out feature here on the shifter tents is that you can position the tent and the rain fly in different ways to suit your needs. So, as you can see, we have just got the tent body set up here. I want to show the different fabrics. On the front we have it positioned with that mesh facing forward. So that mesh provides a lot of breathability. You can see through it and once we get the rain fly on the tent you will see the different ways you can position it, but we have got the mesh part in the front. And then in the back you have a taffeta material. That has a DWR coating on it. So it is not completely waterproof, but it is very water resistant. So if you want to, you can shift that fabric to the front. So it is a symmetrical tent. Depending on which door that you choose on the rain fly to be your front door, you can position this either way. So having a mesh face forward or having that taffeta material face forward. That provides more privacy and it also gives a little bit more weather protection. So that is a really great feature. It is innovative and it is a smart design. It makes you… it lets you kind of position the tent the way you want.
So a stand out feature here. That is where it gets its name. But overall very good protection from water and from the elements.
The floor of this tent is 70 denier nylon taffeta material, completely waterproof, completely seam taped. So you are covered there from ground water. They keep the seams of the floor up off the ground so you are not putting pressure on those and getting water in through that. Bathtub style floor there. And then the white taffeta material above that is a 68D so a lot of durability there and then a lot of breathable mesh here in the rest of the tent body.
You have got very durable, but also very lightweight DAC aluminum poles. You have got a series of clips here instead of sleeves. So it is very easy to set up. And then underneath the tent it does come with a footprint. So that footprint is the same material as the floor, custom fit for the tent. And there is some innovations here as well. You have an interesting shape in the door. So the door is this big U shape right here. You can actually roll the door up so that it is up out of your way and it toggles off at the top. It comes with a gear loft on the inside and there is plenty of pockets on the inside to get your gear up off of the ground.
I have climbed inside the tent to show the space and, as you can see, I toggled up the door, lots of sprawling room, easy in and out. The floor space here is definitely big enough for three back packers. So you have got 82 inches by 74 inches. And the peak height here is 48 inches. So definitely enough room for three sleeping pads in here. And if you want sprawling room it would be great for two people as well.
The pockets in here are really nice. You have got a nice pocket right here above the door. A pocket here on the side. It comes with a gear loft. So this gear loft is in here to hang gear up off of the floor. So just a lot of organization in here. It is simple, but it is really convenient. And then, again, to show this material in the back, it provides a lot more privacy and protection while you have all of that mesh up front that is giving you a lot of breathability with this tent.
We have got the rain fly on the tent and the material here in the rain fly is durable 75D polyester, completely seam taped, completely waterproof. So you are protected from the elements here. And you have got a nice big vestibule in the front. You have a zipper that comes right up the middle. This is a two way zipper. So if you need to have a little more ventilation you can unzip it a little bit from the top if you don’t have too much of a rain going on. And I really like the design of this rain fly. The back of this rain fly has additional gear storage. You have got a zipper that goes up the side and the end of the vestibule in the back is actually shouldered. So you have got additional gear storage. So instead of a traditional vestibule that angles sharply down to the ground, the bottom of that vestibule is kind of up off the ground. It provides additional storage so you can get a pair of boots back there. You can get a backpack back there. So for a three person backpacking tent, that makes it really nice to have all that additional storage.
And the way we have it set up right now is we have got kind of the really breathable side facing front so I will open up this vestibule just to show that.
I have got both sides of the vestibule rolled back. You can do one or the other, but you can see I have the mesh side of this tent facing forward. On a nice day like today we have got a nice breeze, it is sunny. We don’t have to worry about weather getting into the tent. So I have this facing forward just so you can open that up, have a really nice cross breeze with it. If it was a little bit colder or if there was a light rain or something like that, but I still wanted a lot of ventilation, I could shift the rain fly around to the other side so that I could still have this opened up. But the other side of the tent with that taffeta material would give a little bit more protection. So that is just an innovation with this tent where it gets its name. And it is simple, but it makes a big difference.
Some last additional features on the rain fly. There are multiple guy out points. Guy out points around the edge, those four around the top here and there is some on the bottom. There is additional guy out points on the tent that don’t include the stakes and the lines for it. So if you need to batten everything down and you need to tie out every single guy out point, I would suggest bringing along some extra stakes and extra lines, but they give you everything you need to set this up really well.
With the really easy clip design, those lightweight durable poles, the very durable waterproof materials here and the different ways you can use this tent, it makes it really convenient for camping or backpacking in the backcountry.
It is the Mountain Hardwear Shifter Three Person Tent.
