Ultra-lightweight and balancing a minimalist design focus with the need to incorporate essential performance features, the waterproof/breathable Ultimate Direction Men’s Ultra Jacket is sure to appeal to trail runners and other ounce-counters.
An essential piece for your trail running kit, the Ultimate Direction Men’s Ultra Jacket has an innovative waterproof, breathable fabric at a super low weight. These fabrics, in combination with a simple, but efficient design, make this an excellent option for your next race day. Let’s take a look at its features.
The materials in play on the jacket are a 20 D hex nylon with a fast breath ultra fabric. It is a waterproof, breathable fabric and it is super minimal. It is a very, very lightweight fabric, but it is highly breathable for those days when you are generating a lot of body heat on the trail or on the road, whatever you may be doing.
We do have fully taped seams in the jacket, so you get confident waterproof protection all throughout the piece. So it is excellent materials in play on the Ultra Jacket.
Some of the features that I want to call out on the jacket include a full length zipper with an internal storm flap, so you do get waterproof protection even behind that zipper. So nice bonus there. On the inside of the jacket we do have a single pocket. It is a nice internal pocket and it will fit, you know, cell phones or any type of mp3 player and there is a media port there so you can route those headphones or ear buds up and inside the jacket. Another cool little feature is that this pocket will reverse on itself and it will create a nice, small stuff size for the piece so you can throw it into a pack or into your bag, anywhere you may want to keep it stowed away, so a nice storage feature there as well as a nice self stowing pocket.
We do have some other things going on on the piece. As far as the shoulders are concerned, we do have some kind of anatomic shoulders. You have got extra room here to move so when you are running you are not going to get any uncomfortable chafing or it is not going to feel stiff. You have got really good room in the shoulders for movement. Under the arms where you may be generating some of that body heat, you do have these always open vents. So they are kind of no pit zips on the piece, but there is definitely this always open vent that is going to allow air to dump continuously while you are running, so excellent option for ventilation there.
Around the cuffs we do have just a simple elastic cuff, but if it starts raining, if the weather starts honing in on you, you have definitely got these really cool little flip mitts. So they are just tucked away inside the piece and what you can do is simply pull them over your hand and you have got a nice waterproof protection on your hand so your hands can stay warm. They can stay dry. You can keep them protected from the elements. So pretty neat flip mitt inside the piece there. ANd if you don’t want to use it, you don’t have to. You can just tuck it back inside the sleeve, so nice feature there.
We do have a hem draw cord on the piece. It is just a single draw cord on the right hand side, so if you need to cinch that down, make it nice and snug, you can just give that a pull and it won’t ride up on you while you are moving, so a nice benefit to the hem there.
We do have a hood on the piece and there are a couple of things that are really neat going on with the hood. So you do have this kind of wire shaping to provide some structure. It gives you some extra protection. And there is kind of an internal cord here. So when you cinch the adjustment on the back of the hood, it kind of draws it in on the head, creates a nice comfortable food and that hood is not going to move around on you. You do have two other points of adjustment on the outside here which will draw the face in and keep it nice and snug.
Another cool feature about the hood is it has this kind of tunnel. It is a mesh tunnel, so that when you are running air can actually flow over the top of your head through this tunnel. There is kind of a port on the front here and on the back for air to flow through, so, again, maximum breathability is essential with this piece, really nice features, very innovative design with the ultra jacket.
The fit of this piece is fairly regular. It is not super tight, not super loose. I have definitely got room for layers underneath, so if you were running on a colder day you could certainly put a nice mid layer under the piece. It has got a lot of room for movement, again, with breathability in mind, with movement. You know, you are always going to be moving fast, running, biking, hiking, whatever you may be doing. This is definitely a versatile piece that is going to allow you to be free.
I am wearing a medium here. I normally do wear size medium and it fits pretty true. Everything is in line as it should be.
So there you have it. It is the Ultimate Direction Men’s Ultra Jacket. Whether you are running, biking, hiking, climbing or any activity where you may be moving light and fast and you need extra breathability with weather protection, this is an excellent and versatile option.
