At 5 ounces, the Mountain Hardwear Men’s Ghost Whisperer Down Vest features Q.Shield 800-fill down insulation to serve up ultra-lightweight warmth for everything from backpacking to climbing to wear around town.
Keeping a low profile design by using a uniquely designed synthetic insulation, the Mountain Hardwear men’s’ Thermostatic jacket provides lightweight warmth, ideal for layering during cold weather activities. Let’s take a closer look at its features.
Mountain Hardwear is using their Thermal.Q Elite synthetic insulation. This is a very uniquely designed synthetic as it mimics the structure of down fibers while keeping the properties of a synthetic insulator. So it is very loosely woven, but it is structured in such a way that it has great compressibility and it also rebounds well so in the event that you stuff it down or compress it down into a nice compact size, it will rebound nicely without creating gaps or loose areas where it wouldn’t provide insulation, a really nice feature and really nice structure of the insulation in this jacket.
Some other features that the jacket offers are two zippered hand warmer pockets, nice large pockets. Get your hands in there. And the synthetic insulation is actually covering the outside of the hands so it does keep your hands warm if you weren’t using gloves.
We have got one Napoleon style chest pocket here. Nice small pocket, easy access in the chest area. You have got a full length zipper on the Thermostatic jacket. It goes all the way up and it has a nice zipper garage at the top so it will resist any, you know, abrasion or chafing on the neck and it also won’t snag your beard. So a nice feature there.
We do have elastic around the cuffs. So that really helps to hold in the warmth and keep out that cold drafty air. To add to that, we have a single draw cord attachment on the hem, so you can pull that nice and tight. And it will cinch in that lower section to, again, hold in the warm air and keep out drafty cold air from getting up inside.
This jacket does stuff down into its own self stowing pocket. So on the opposite side of the zipper on one of your pockets here you will have a, you know, dual sided zipper. So you can turn this jacket inside out on itself and it will stuff down into a nice compact size, ideal for throwing in a back pack, clipping to a harness or maybe throwing it in a suitcase if you are traveling, a nice feature there.
Keeping with that light weight design, this jacket is using a 15D nylon face fabric. It is a nice lightweight face fabric, but also provides some good durability. It is a standard fit. So it is a not too tight, not too loose fit. I am wearing a medium. I normally wear mediums in most jackets and this one fits me very well. I have got room to layer underneath and I have got room to layer over top. I could see this being a good outer layer on a cool-er day, but not too cold and a great mid layer on a cold day where you need some extra protection on the outside, such as a weatherproof shell or a heavier soft shell of any sort.
All around it is a nice, lightweight, compact compressible jacket.
So there you have it. It is the Mountain Hardwear men’s Thermostatic jacket.
