Fully-insulated and highly weather-resistant, the Outdoor Research Men’s Diode Hooded Jacket delivers cold-weather performance that far surpasses most insulated jackets. Weather worn for skiing, alpine climbing, or snowshoeing, the Diode Hooded Jacket ensures that you stay warm, dry, and comfortable.
WIth an innovative insulation and body mapped construction, the Outdoor Research Men’s Diode Hooded Down Jacket is an excellent option for belaying in those colder, nastier temperatures or even hiking or just a general winter wear jacket. Let’s check out some of the features with the Diode.
The first thing we want to talk about is that insulation that we have got in play. We have got a Primaloft gold insulation with a... it is a down blend. So it is a 70 percent down and a 30 percent polyester insulation. And the down is water resistant. So we have got really good water resistant materials throughout the jacket, but with that hybrid construction of down and insulation you get the best of both worlds. You get really lightweight and compressible synthetics in areas that may be exposed to more harsh weather, like the shoulders, the arms and the waist region and the lightweight compressible down in the areas where you need that core warmth. So you have got really smart construction with the insulation in play on the jacket.
The materials of the jacket that are protecting that insulation are a super light, but really durable Pertex Endurance and Pertex Quantum fabrics. So in the body of the jacket we have got a 22 D Pertex fabric, really lightweight, very breathable and weather resistant, but not fully waterproof. So keep that in mind if you are in extremely harsh weather or nasty downpours. In the hood of the jacket we do have a 30 D Pertex fabric, so it is a little more durable. It is a helmet compatible hood so it is designed to go over the top of a helmet. So it is a little bit more durable if you were to brush up against some type of rock or potentially ice terrain if you are out ice climbing.
Some of the other features in play on the jacket include a full length front zipper with a hidden storm flap behind that. So it helps to seal out that drafty air. On the inside of the jacket we do have a few pockets to mention. On either side we have a nice kind of shove it pocket, so you can throw extra gloves there, skins if you are skiing, but two stretchy pockets on either side of the jacket there. On the right side we do have kind of a hidden zippered pocket there so you can throw some other items that you may want to keep closer to the body and nice and secure, because it is a zipper closure pocket there.
On the outside of the jacket we do have a few pockets as well. So we have got two lower hand warmer pockets. They open nice and big, very sizable pockets. On the inside of those pockets they are brushed with a like fleece so you have got really good warmth if you are not wearing gloves and nice comfort as well.
The left hand pocket will reverse, so it will switch on itself and turn into a nice compact stuff sack. I could see that being a really great travel pillow or a camp pillow if you decide to go that route and want to be extra lightweight.
We do have a napoleon style chest pocket so there is a nice easy to access chest pocket here. It has got a pretty neat little pocket inside the pocket for some media items, if you want to throw those in there. And there is a small pass through on this piece here, so you can actually route ear buds or headphones up through the jacket so they are on the inside, not getting in the way of any activity you may be doing, so nice media pass through and extra pocket on the chest there.
As I mentioned, we do have a hood and it is a helmet compatible hood. So we will take a look at that. It has got a nice wire brim here, so you have got really good structure to add extra protection around the hood, very comfortable an fully insulated hood as well. We do have some adjustment points on the hood. So you have got two toggles down on the bottom that will really help to cinch in the face of the hood there if you are not wearing a helmet and we also have one adjustment point on the back of the hood as well so you can really draw that hood back and really cinch down the fit, again, if you are not wearing a helmet. So you have got really good adjustment in the hood of the Diode Jacket.
Down at the hem we do have some adjustment as well. On the right side we just have a single point of adjustability, so you can really cinch down that hem. Make sure it is not riding up if you are wearing a harness or if you are wearing a backpack hip belt. You can get a really snug and secure fit around the hem of the jacket.
On the cuffs we do have a nice easy hook and loop closure. So if you just detach those and reattach it, really nice, simple adjustment there to ensure that that warm air stays in the cold air stays out, so a nice hook and loop adjustment on either cuff of the jacket.
Another thing that I want to mention about this jacket, it does have kind of a two way zipper on the front. So you can zip it up regularly like I have got it here, but you can also zip it up from the bottom. So if you were belaying you can easily access your belay loop or if you are sitting down, you can sit down without creating that uncomfortable bulge in the jacket. It also helps to kind of vent or dump some of that heat in the event that you are getting a little warm, so really good advantages to having that two way zipper on the front of the jacket.
The fit is pretty standard. It is not super tight, not super lose. It is kind of a mobile piece, so you have got really good movement in the jacket, designed for those backcountry pursuits where you are going to need some serious weather protection and warmth with that hybrid insulation.
And there you have it. It is the Outdoor Research Men’s Diode Hooded Down Jacket. It is a great piece with that hybrid mapped insulation and that hybrid construction of down and synthetic giving you excellent warmth no matter what the conditions.
