Utilizing premium materials and innovative construction, the Marmot Plasma 15 degree sleeping bag is the perfect option for ounce counters who want a fully featured bag. We will take a look at all the features here and what makes this bag so innovative and special.
The first thing to talk about with any sleeping bag is how it keeps you warm and how it insulates you. So this is filled with quality 875 plus fill power down. The down is treated with Marmot’s Down Defender. And the important thing to know about Down Defender is that each plume of down is treated with a water resistant coating. So you have all of the packable, light weight, lofty qualities of down, but it is going to stay drier longer in damp conditions. It is going to dry out faster if it becomes wet and ultimately it is going to keep you warmer. So you are going to be just as comfortable on night one of your trip as you are going to be on night eight or ten. It is really high quality material here with that down. And along with the down you have got really interesting and innovative baffles here. You have got vertical baffles as opposed to horizontal baffles that you see in most sleeping bags. These vertical baffles are going to transfer the heat from your core up and down the bag and it is going to keep you a lot warmer. It is going to provide more even heat throughout your body. And within these baffles there are little flow gates. That is going to prevent unwanted shifting of down. So although you have these long baffles, the down isn’t going to move to spots where you don’t want it to. It is not going to prevent cold spots and that sort of thing. So a lot of innovation going on behind the scenes here.
And with these long baffles, that also cuts down on weight. So you don’t have a lot of stitching and things like that. So a lot of innovation there. And with the material here, you have got a very light weight 10 denier fabric. So it keeps the weight of the bag down. It is a really soft fabric. You have got rip stop in there. So it is durable for its weight. And on the inside of the bag you have got a really soft, comfortable material, too. So that is soft against the skin.
This is called a 15 degree sleeping bag and Marmot uses EN ratings or European norm ratings for their sleeping bags. So this is EN tested at a comfort level of around 28 degrees. The lower limit is around 17 or 18 degrees Fahrenheit. So definitely take that into consideration before taking this out into the backcountry.
This bag does come in two different sizes. You have got regular and long. The regular is six feet. It fits someone comfortably who is up to six feet tall. The long is going to fit someone who is six feet six inches tall. And you do have a mummy shape here. It is sup-posed to be tapered in to have a pretty tight fit around your body that is going to be really thermal efficient. So you have got a traditional hood here at the top. If I take a look at the hood, it is really nicely baffled. It reminds me of a hood that is on a big down puffy jacket, where it is really comfortable. It fits around your head really well. You have got soft material on the inside. So if you need to batten it down, if you need, you know, all of that warmth that this sleeping bag provides, you can cinch down this collar right here. There is a nice baffle, an extra baffle sewn on the inside of this bag, so it is going to be nicely baffled around your neck and really hold in your heat.
There is a full length zipper here and it does taper down into the foot box. There is a trapezoidal foot box here, so you have really nice shaping around your feet. You definitely have enough room to move around and that is going to just give you more thermal efficiency.
If you do need to vent the bag, this full length zipper you are able to unzip it from the bottom and just vent it from the bottom at night if you need to. You also have the zipper that comes all the way up to the top. So if I open that up there, there is a really nice baffle behind that zipper. So you are not going to have cold air coming through the zipper. And there is durable material sewn behind the zipper to prevent snags. So even if you were to get the zipper snagged on there, it is not going to snag against this really light weight material. It is going to be pretty durable there.
Marmot does give a stuff sack and a storage sack with the Plasma sleeping bags. Here is the stuff sack. It is just made out of that really light weight material. This packs down to be very small for a 15 degree bag. With that high quality 875 plus power down, you are going to be able to compress that down and really throw in your pack. For all the warmth and all the loft this provides, it is a very, very low weight and a very small pack size. So you have the stuff sack there. They also include a bigger storage sack. So you don’t want to store this in a compressed state at home. You want to store it in the bigger storage sack. And they provide that as well.
Overall, the Marmot Plasma 15 degree down sleeping bag has got all the features you want at a very low weight. They are using premium materials with this light weight Pertex Quantum material here. You have got the 875 fill down and that is Down Defender. So you are getting a lot of protection there and all of the different features that go into this bag make it really innovative and certainly worth the price.
