The Kelty Coyote 65 internal frame backpack is an excellent balance of performance, capacity (3950 cubic inches), and affordability. It also features Kelty’s innovative PerfectFIT suspension. Load-hauling capability, convenient access points, and an array of features combine to equip the pack for overnight and weekend backpacking trips.
The PerfectFIT suspension system provides accurate on-body size adjustment, allowing you to customize your fit in seconds. With PerfectFIT, gone are the days of taking measurements and trying on various pack sizes in a gear shop to determine the best fit for your particular body (or ordering a pack online that may or may not fit once you’ve received it). The pack’s PerfectFIT accommodates torso lengths ranging from 15.5 to 21 inches. A single lightweight aluminum stay, a horizontal anti-barreling stay, and an HDPE framesheet deliver trustworthy support. This design provides stability and load-bearing strength while avoiding the unwieldy rigidity of external frame packs. Hex mesh on the padded backpanel and waistbelt provides excellent cushioning and ventilation. Load lifter straps relieve stress on your shoulders and an adjustable sternum strap positions the shoulder straps across the chest to prevent chafing under the arms and on the shoulders.
The top-loading pack also incorporates an innovative design on the lowest portion of the packbag that provides wide access through the bottom of pack. This feature makes it much easier to get a sleeping bag, clothes or other gear in and out of the Coyote 65 than is often the case with the compartment access on many packs of comparable carrying capacity. A zippered front panel offers additional quick access to your gear from the front of the pack. The lid of the pack can be removed entirely for use as a sleek sling pack. A large stretch pocket on the front of the pack is perfect for keeping additional layers at the ready.
Additional features include a front zippered pocket, zippered side pockets, integrated compression straps, a carry handle, ice-axe loops, and dual mesh water bottle pockets. A lined interior pocket and built-in tube exit make the pack hydration system (sold separately) compatible.
The Kelty Coyote 64 is available in your choice of color options.

Real Customer Reviews
- Great organization of compartments
Likes: Color is as shown, and very attractive. Best part is the arrangement of pockets and compartments.
Dislikes: No problems with this pack!
- Good quality
Likes: The backpack seems to be of good quality, and all of the pockets are great!
Dislikes: I don't like the divider for the sleeping back. It needs to be sewn in. I'm interested to see how it works when I try to pack it, because I'm not convinced that everything won't just fall out of the bottom if I try to take the sleeping bag out!
- Loved it online, disappointed in person. Overall a good bag for most, just not for me.
Likes: Adjustable torso system
Good looking bag
Breathable straps and back panel
Side pockets (like that it has them, hate that they shrunk them for no real reason)
Sleeping area bag zipper
Front main compartment access
Dislikes: Side pockets are too small compared to the coyote 80 that I was using. This pack has a taller frame, side by side compared to the 80, so there is no excuse to shrink the pockets. Now there is no accessible area for my 32oz kleen canteen like before. It will fall out of the side stretch pockets. A terrible error in the design of this bag. They should have kept the pockets the same size. I would keep knives, saw, tools etc in the other. It was a perfect setup before, just needed to lose a few liters from bag, not pockets.
The trap door toggle for the sleeping bag area is a joke. A lot of companies are employing this nowadays and it is a mistake. There should be a true zipper separation between compartments.
When loaded to 42lb (manufacturer suggested max is 55) it is uncomfortable. This is mostly due to the narrow frame compared to the wider frames of before, most companies are guilty of this on this size pack. They build them taller and deeper instead of wider now which is bad for us avg height broad body types.
- High quality pack for a good price
Likes: Side pockets, and the pass through behind them
Three access points to the main compartment (top, front, and bottom if you remove the divider for the sleeping bag compartment)
PerfectFit System is excellent for adjustments, and the hip belt is well padded and comfortable
Durable material and most straps have their own built-in bungees to roll the straps up to keep them tidy
Buckles and zippers are high quality
Very adjustable, not only for the suspension system but for the straps on the pack
Top compartment can be extended to strap gear between the top pack and the main compartment
Top compartment is completely removable and can be left at home, and can convert into a daypack
Daisy chains on the bottom, and compression straps that can be used to attach gear to the bottom (tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad)
Dislikes: Divider to sleeping bag compartment is a little small
Some straps get in the way of each other (hood straps and compression straps for the side, in particular)
Stretch pockets on the sides for water bottles are a little loose/can't be tightened down
All my dislikes of this pack are very minor things that can be easily overlooked
- Excellent Backpack
Likes: Great quality heavy duty made, plenty of room and extra pockets on the sides. Can really hold a load, basically if you can fit it’ll carry it. Absolute satisfied with this purchase and would highly recommend.
Dislikes: A little on the heavy side, but it’s Quality is why.
- Love this Pack
Likes: Comfortable, roomy, love the features and the perfect fit system. Also appreciate the side pockets, something many packs are lacking.
Dislikes: Haven't found anything I don't like yet
