The Altra Running Women’s Lone Peak 4.0 Low RSM has the balance of weight, cushioning, and responsiveness you’d expect from a shoe with this iconic name, but this model is equipped with bolstered protection against rain, snow, and mud (RSM).
As with all Altra Running offerings, the shoe has a FootShape toe box that differs greatly from the aggressive taper of traditional running shoes. This design lets your big toe to remain in a straight position while allowing your other toes to spread naturally. This broader cut reduces the risk of bunions, hammer toes, and plantar fasciitis. The shoe also utilizes a Zero Drop platform (height of the heel and the forefront are the same) that encourages a natural stride rather than elevating the heel or manipulating foot position. This is meant to promote better alignment and a more natural posture while on the move which in turn lessens impact.
The quick-drying mesh upper utilizes waterproof eVent fabric to ward off moisture while ensuring breathability to keep your feet dry and comfortable. An integrated GaiterTrap allows for the easy attachment of Altra gaiters (sold separately). A dual-layer EVA midsole delivers comfort and reduces fatigue. Shaped to mirror the skeletal structure of your foot, a protective StoneGuard reduces the impact of rocks and roots.
The shoe has a stack height of 25 mm and weighs in at just 1 pound, 3.8 ounces per pair. The TrailClaw rubber outsole has a tacky surface and a lug pattern that together deliver excellent traction regardless of terrain.
Sold in pairs and your choice of color options, the Altra Running Women’s Lone Peak 4.0 Low RSM trail running shoe is available in women’s full and half sizes.

Likes: These are so rugged that I am replacing my best hiking boots. I prefer to hike with a light and flexible shoe like this one. The toe box is also great for wide feet. No foot cramps or unhappy toes. Great in the rain, even for running down wet escalators. Generally very comfortable and helps promote good walking/running form.
This summer I hiked at least 50 miles in southern Utah with my Altra Superior 3.5 with no complaints except that I could never get the sand out of them! Having used both, this one has much deeper treads and is more rigid than the Superior shoe.
Dislikes: The front part of the shoe (the tongue?) is a little high and tight on the top of my foot. I'm also not sure how flexible the RSM fabric is--it's starting to look creased after just a few wears. They also are a little goofy looking (think Goofy's shoes). They are practical, but not fashionable.
