The Mountain Hardwear Dynotherm Down Vest is lightweight, durable, and highly packable, with a high warmth-to-weight ratio due to its Q.Shield Down technology.
Lightweight, durable and packable, the Mountain Hardwear men’s Dynotherm vest is a versatile option for casual wear or wear in the backcountry. Let’s take a look at its features.
The main story with the Dynotherm down vest is the insulation. It is a 650 fill Q.Shield down insulation. It differs a bit from traditional down where it has a water resistant treatment. Normal traditional down is just regular. If it gets wet it loses its insulating properties and doesn't retain any of its warmth and it also takes a long time to dry out. With Mountain Hardwear’s Q.Shield treatment, this down retains its loft even when it is wet. It dries out faster and it resists that moisture longer, so really nice features there. It really adds versatility to the piece.
So that is what is filling this jacket. It is nice, light weight and it is compressible.
Another aspect I like about the Dynotherm vest is the double weave stitching or double needle stitching they use. So on each baffle there are actually two lines of stitching. It is really going to increase the overall durability of the vest.
Some other features on this vest are the two zippered hand warmer pockets, nice big pockets. And the down is actually on the outside, so it does still keep your hands warm if you are not wearing gloves or anything like that. We have also got a chest pocket, Napoleon style chest pocket, nice and small. You can keep some smaller items there. We have got a full length zipper that goes the length of the jacket. And at the very top it has a nice zipper garage. So that is not going to irritate your chin. It won’t snag your beard. It is a nice comfortable fit there.
And on the inside of the jacket you have actually got two big internal pockets, one on either side, so some nice features there as well.
And on the hem of the jacket there is a nice draw cord so you can cinch it down in the event that it gets a little more chilly. You can really trap that heat in.
This jacket has a standard fit. So it is not tailored or athletic cut in any way. I am currently wearing a medium. I normally wear mediums in most styles. I like this jacket. I like the vest. It is a really great layering piece. I could see it being good in cooler weather or, you know, as a casual outer layer if I am going out in the city. I also like that it has got a nice two tone color scheme, good styling. And it would be a great piece to throw a jacket over, a shell of some sort and take it out into the backcountry.
So there you have it. It is the Mountain Hardwear men’s Dynotherm down vest, a versatile piece for casual or backcountry use.
