A no-frills offering for the frugal hiker who can do without bells and whistles but demands reliable performance, Black Diamond Trail Back poles offer three-section adjustability and user-friendly external locking mechanisms at an extremely affordable price.
Streamlined and simple and a lot of adjustability, the Black Diamond Trail Back Trekking Poles deliver reliable backcountry performance at a very budget friendly price.
This is an aluminum three section trekking pole. So it is a traditional telescoping pole. You have got three sections here and it packs down to be pretty small when it is com-pressed. So the minimum length here is about 26 inches. And it adjusts all the way up to 140 centimeters. So you have on the low end 100 centimeters all the way up to 140. That this going to fit a lot of different people and you have a lot of adjustability here.
The stand out feature here is the external locks. These are Black Diamond FlickLocks. These couldn't be any easier to use. So right now the pole is just condensed down to the smallest size. These two locks, all you have to do is flick it open with your thumb, adjust it to your preferred height. Again, there is markings on this pole from 100 all the way up to 140 centimeters. I am going go adjust it down to about 120, flick it closed. Same thing on the bottom. So if I am going to adjust this pole to 120 centimeters, I would find that marking on the bottom as well and flick that closed. It couldn’t be any easier to adjust. And these locks are very, very strong.
Going up to the top of the pole, you have really nice, durable rubber grips here. And the top of this pole is ... has like a flat side. So if you need to, you can palm the top of the pole if you are going downhill or, if you need to, make quick adjustments with those flick locks going up and downhill. You can do that. But a really comfortable grip there. And then you also have padded straps. The straps are adjustable so all you need to do to adjust them is pull on this webbing tab to tighten them, loosen them. That really takes the strain off of your wrists as you are hiking.
Moving down the pole here, again, you have got very durable but lightweight aluminum construction and down here at the tip you have Black Diamond’s press fit flex tips. So these tips are really nice. The reason they are called flex tips is that if you were to, let’s say, get this stuck between rocks or in a position that might damage the trekking pole, these flex tips are meant to break or flex before the actual shaft section of the trekking pole would break. These are press fit tips. So you can replace it after years of use if you need to replace that carbide end. You can get replacement tips for it.
There is also a thread here on the tips so it comes with a standard small performance basket. You can screw that off. And it also comes with a winter basket. So you can take this one off and put the other one on. That adds a lot of value to this already value conscious pole.
All in all you have got a really durable, really reliable pole. It would be great for back-packing, hiking or any adventure you can throw at it.
It is the Black Diamond Trail Back Trekking Poles.
