Catering to runners who venture out at night, the rechargeable Black Diamond Springer headlamp produces a bright, ovalized 130 lumen beam and has its very own “taillight” to make runners more visible on roads or in urban settings.
Built specifically with runners in mind, the powerful, innovative and easy to use Black Diamond Sprinter is perfect on and off the trail. We will take a look at all the different features one by one and talk about what makes the Sprinter so great.
If we take a quick 360 degree look at this light, in the front you have your double power LED light. This is a bright white light. At the highest lumens it is 130 lumens, but you can dim that down all the way to four lumens. So you have a lot of adjustability in the light. And the lens here in the front is not specifically a spot light. It is not a short proximity light either. It is somewhere in between. It makes it perfect for running. You can see there is a couple of straps at play. You have got straps on the side and one that goes over top of your head. You have got the battery pack in the back. And what is great about this, what also makes it perfect for running is you don’t have your big, heavy battery housing up front where you are running. It is not bouncing around. You have the weight distributed really evenly onto the back. So as you are running it is not going to feel really heavy up here in the front. And this strap that goes over the top of your head really locks that in, but if you don’t want that strap, you can actually remove it and leave it behind.
Taking a look here at the back you have got red LEDs in the back and that is your tail light. So if you ... every time the light in the front is on, that back light is going to be on as well. If I just turn that on you can see that is going to blink. You can just hit that but-ton and turn it off if you don’t want that tail light on.
Going back to the front just to show the different settings here. Again, you have that single push button, turns the light on and if you want to dim that light all you have to do is hold it, the button in. It will dim all the way down and come back up. So it is going to blink when it is at the top and when it is at the bottom.
I stopped it kind of half way. This power tap button on the side is really great for saving power, saving energy. So when you are running along, if you want to get your eyes on something, you want the light to be a little bit brighter, all you have to do is tap the power tap on the side and that is going to bring that light all the way up to the highest lumens. In the same way, you can just hit that button again and it is going to go back down to that same setting that you had it on before.
You do have really good safety features with this light. You have a strobe here. So if you hit that top button three times that is going to strobe, so a really great safety feature there. Again, going to the back, you can turn the tail light of this light on separately from the front. So, like I said, every time you have that front light on, the back light is going to come on as well. But you can... there is three settings here with this red LEDs in the back. You hit the button once and it is going to blink. If I hit the button twice you have a slow-er strobe. And then if I were to hit that button three times in a row, you have just a static red light. So, again, nice tail light.
And you may have noticed there is a little green light that comes on below the rear tail light. And that is your battery power indicator. There is a rechargeable lithium polymer battery here. And you can recharge that with a USB cord that is included. So you don’t buy a separate batteries for this light. It is rechargeable. It makes it last a really long time. And when the batteries start to diminish that battery power indicator is going to go from green down to orange and then to red. So once you are below 25 percent battery, it is going to be red and you know it is time to start recharging your light.
Something I really appreciate about Black Diamond lights is lock mode. And that gives you the security that you are not going to throw this light in your back pack and it is going to turn on accidentally and drain the batteries. So for lock mode all you have to do is hold in this top button for a couple of seconds and it is going to turn off. And then when I try and turn the light on, it is not going to turn on. In the same way, to turn lock mode off you just hold that light in for a couple of seconds and then I am able to turn the light on and off.
There is an extremely adjustable, soft, comfortable strap here. And, like I mentioned be-fore, you have straps around these ides and then also on the top. But you can definitely adjust this to wide variety of sizes. So if you are just wearing it on your head for running you can really cinch that strap down to make it pretty small. But I can see this working on a bike helmet as well. You can really extend that out. With the white light on the front, the red light on the back, it would be perfect for biking as well. But all in all this light very innovative, the rechargeable batteries, it is going to save you a lot of money on batteries over the long haul. And all of the run specific features is going to make this the perfect companion for running on and off the trail.
It is the Black Diamond Sprinter Headlamp.
