Providing varied lighting levels and settings, the compact Black Diamond Spot is a powerful and versatile headlamp. Delivering both long-distance beam and close-proximity options, the Spot is ideal for backpacking or camping.
The feature rich, yet very easy to us Black Diamond Spot Headlamp is the perfect companion for backpacking, climbing, hiking, traveling or emergency use.
The real story here is, as the name suggests, it is a spotlight. And there is a couple of different LEDs on here that allow you to use the light in different ways. There is one big push button right on the top. It is very easy to use. It is a nice button up there and that allows you to scroll through the different settings. There is also a power tap button on the side. We will talk about that. But really simple to use. If I hit the button once this is the bright spot light that is right in the middle. That is a triple power single LED and you have got a lot of brightness here. It is all the way up to 130 lumens.
Now you can dim with each of these features. You can dim this down to four lumens. You have a lot of adjustability there. And to go to the second setting, if I hit this top but-ton twice you see the two side LEDs and those are two single powered LEDs. You have adjustability with the lumens there as well. And then the other setting you have got here is a red LED. So if I just hold in this button here you can see that the two red LEDs come on. And the thing I love about the Black Diamond Spot and specifically the red night vision, is that once you have it set on the red setting, if I push the button once to turn it off, I don’t need to scroll through all of the other settings and lose my night vision to turn the red LEDs back on. You can also dim with the red LEDs. So the dimming feature all you have to do is hold in that top button, dim it down to the bottom. And on each setting it will blink when it is at the bottom setting. If you hold it in and go all the way back up to the top, it will blink again to tell you that it is at its highest lumens.
This light also has great safety features, so with the both the side proximity LEDs, those white lights and the red LEDs, you have a blinking feature. So I have it set to red right now. If I were to hit that button three times you can see that the red LEDs start strobing. So you can use this as a bike light if you wanted to. You have, you know, white light in the front and red light in the back. You can use this for just emergency use or if you need that strobe.
You have got a really convenient power tap button right here on the side. And the way this works, I have got the spotlight on right now with the highest lumens. If I were to dim this down, just by holding it, and dim it down, you know, to the bottom or about half way, this saves battery, but if you want to go back up to the top... let’s say you are hiking along in the dark and you see something that you want to get your eyes on, all you have to do is tap that button on the side and that will bring it back up to the top. In the same way, if you want to continue hiking along, you tap that button again and it will bring it right back down to the spot that you had it before. So as you dim and as you, you know, make adjustments to this light, the power tap button is really, really convenient.
When you turn the Spot on, you will notice a little green light that stays on for a couple of seconds on the side. And that is the battery power indicator. Now right now we have got full battery life so there is a green light that shows there. But as the battery diminish-es you have an orange light and then a red light. So once it gets under 25 percent of battery life that red light will come so you know it is time to change the batteries.
While we are on the batteries, it is really easy to change the batteries out in the housing here. If I flip the light upside down there is just a little tab. You open that up to expose the battery housing. This is powered by three triple A batteries and while this light is very water resistant, it is not waterproof. It is not completely waterproof. So take that into consideration before taking it into the backcountry.
This light also has lock out mode. And it is really convenient when you are traveling or when you are throwing the headlamp in your backpack. If you simply hold down the top button you will see it strobe through the red, the red LED and then you will see a blue light come on on the side. That is lock out mode. When the blue light comes on, that means that tapping a button up top isn’t going to turn it on. So the lamp isn’t going to turn on when you don't want it to. It is not going to drain the batteries.
Now once you want to use the lamp again, all you have to do is hold that top button in until you see that blue light go away and then you are able to use the light again.
You get really nice tilts with the Spot. So when you are wearing it you can tilt it down to look at the ground or you can tilt it up. It makes it really convenient. And the strap here is a really comfortable, stretchy, but lightweight strap. It has a lot of adjustability. So I can see you being able to us this with a helmet, let’s say a climbing helmet or even a bike helmet. But you have a lot of adjustability there that you can adjust it down to fit right over your head as well.
All in all the Black Diamond Spot is a great lamp for backpacking, hiking, climbing when you want a compact headlamp that doesn’t weigh very much but has a lot of features and is still very affordable.
It is the Black Diamond Spot.
