With its water-repellent DownTek insulation and a roomy semi-rectangular shape, the Big Agnes Yampa 45 Degree sleeping bag is designed for warm-weather backpacking but can also be used as a liner or an overbag in extreme cold.
The bag is insulated with 650-fill DownTek insulation. Down insulation has long been renowned for its compressible properties and efficiency in delivering an excellent warmth-to-weight ratio. The shortcoming of down has been its susceptibility to the effects of moisture, losing much of its performance qualities when wet or damp. DownTek insulation utilizes nano technology and a proprietary application process to provide water-repellency and both anti-microbial and anti-bacterial protection. A polyester microfiber rip-stop shell also features a water repellent treatment and provides lightweight durability. A quilted design eliminates cold spots and offer consistent heat distribution.
In a traditional sleeping system, the bag lies on top of a sleeping pad. In this configuration, many people find themselves rolling off the pad at night. Plus, the insulation on the bottom of the bag is compressed by the sleeper's weight. Once compressed, the fill loses most of its insulating properties. The Big Agnes Sleep System is different, joining the bag and pad together. The pad slides into a sleeve on the bottom side of the bag, supplying insulation to the otherwise uninsulated bottom of the bag while the top and sides of the bag are insulated like a traditional sleeping bag. This design provides a secure foundation so you can roll, twist and turn freely during the night without ever rolling off your pad. It also prevents the bag from twisting and engulfing you in an uncomfortable mess.
The Yampa 45 Degree is available in Regular (fits up to 5' 10") and Long (6' 6") lengths. Once you match your bag with a rectangular sleeping pad of the appropriate dimensions (20" x 72" for Regular or 20" x 78" for Long), spending a night in the bag is both warm and comfortable. Note that the pad is sold separately.

- excellent quilt style sleeping bag
Likes: This sleeping bag is made from very high quality fabric and fill, has excellent loft. I have only tested it indoors (slept in a car and cabin) but it felt like it would keep you warm during outdoors camping at the temperatures listed. I was looking for a sleeping bag without fill at the bottom, as I have read that compressed down has no benefit of keeping you warm. I also did not want a pure quilt design as I was going to use the bottom as a sheet. Big Agnes had the perfect design! The zippers never catch and work very smoothly. You have a double zipper to vent your feet, but it does not open up completely like a comforter. It is designed to be used with a pad that goes in the sheet like part in the bottom, which I have not tested. It has a good pillow sleeve (you can stuff with clothes or an actual pillow,) and the stuffing wouldn't slide out. I am very happy with this purchase. It compresses well with the compression girdle(sold separately) and is very lightweight. You can easily side sleep in this one as it is roomy.
Dislikes: The only reason that I am giving 4 instead of 5 stars is that the bag was a bit too roomy for me. I am a female 5`4`` 130lb and opted for semi-rectangular design as I thought foot box of mummy style would be too narrow. However, my feet did not really reach the foot box, leaving too much room and my feet were cold when I woke up. Planning to stuff the foot box with clothes next time I use this. The quilt design lacks a hood, it wasn't an issue for me as I was able to tuck my head in, again due to my short height.
