Utilizing a layer of internal insulation to achieve a warm R-value of 4.1, the lightweight and compact Big Agnes Insulated Air Core inflatable sleeping pad is ideal for 3-season backpacking.
With a layer of synthetic insulation, the Big Agnes Insulate Air Core is a great packable, lightweight option that is going to provide warmth in the backcountry. We are taking a look here at the regular mummy size for this pad. And it comes in a multitude of sizes, anywhere from petite to extra wide and long. So this particular one is the mummy shape which is cut down into the feet and in the head, so you save a little bit of weight there. But it does come in rectangular options as well. But the features are all the same throughout the different sizes.
So the first thing I want to call out is that insulation. You get a layer of synthetic Primaloft insulation, so it is very high quality. And that is just going to bring R value up a little bit. So the R value here is 4.1, definitely a three season option. If you are taking it into the coldest of temperatures you might want to pair it with maybe an open or a closed cell foam pad underneath to bring that R value up. But definitely three season use. It is lightweight and packable.
The regular mummy size that I have got here weighs in at around 20 ounces. The different sizes weigh differently, but overall this is very packable and very lightweight. The fabric here on the top is a durable 40 denier nylon rip stop fabric, so you do have durability even though it is so lightweight. And all the seams around the edges are very durable seams. It is airtight. And it, you know, definitely anticipates that you are going to be putting pressure on it. So those seams are really nice. And you do have an I beam construction here. So as you inflate the pad these beams just inflate with air so it gives you a really comfortable base. It is about three and a quarter inches thick, so it gives you a nice base up off of the ground. I happen to be a side sleeper and with a three and a quarter inch thick pad here, I can sleep on my side and not have my shoulders or my hips digging into the ground. So I really like that feature with this pad.
And then the inflation valve here is really easy to use. You have just the inflation valve up there and what I like about this is it is kind of a screw open, screw closed type of design. So if you inflate this either by mouth or with a Big Agnes accessory that is going to inflate that, at the end once you are laying on it, you can just reach behind you and kind of open up that valve and let a little bit of air out to let you sink down into the pad. So I really like that valve. It is a very durable construction there.
And then another comfort thing I like about this pad is that the beams on the edges here are set up a little bit higher. So when you are sleeping on the pad it kind of hugs around you on either side, so you don’t feel like you are sliding off of the pad on either side, so really great there.
Any of the Big Agnes sleeping bags that have a sleeve that accommodate a 20 inch wide sleeping pad, this one is going to be perfect, so it is going to fit right into that sleeve. It is going to be great for that. And just some other things her. The face fabric, while it is kind of shiny, it is pretty silent for an air pad. So unlike some of those other crunchy types of air pads, this is going to be, you know, a really good night’s sleep. It is not very loud at all. And the packed dimensions are really small when you pack it down. So it is a great backpacking option. When you want something that is comfortable, that you are able to just throw in your pack and not notice it when you are carrying it there on the trail.
