A lightweight, nimble, and moderately cushioned option for backpacking and hiking, the Altra Running Men’s Lone Peak 3.5 Mid Mesh trail shoe combines the responsiveness and breathability of a running shoe with the higher-cut support and stability of a mid-height boot.
As with all Altra shoes, the shoe has a FootShape toe box that differs greatly from the aggressive taper of traditional running shoes. This design lets your big toe remain in a straight position while allowing your other toes to spread naturally. This broader cut reduces the risk of bunions, hammer toes, and plantar fasciitis. The shoe also utilizes a Zero Drop platform (height of the heel and the forefront are the same) that encourages a natural stride rather than elevating the heel or manipulating foot position. This is meant to promote better alignment and a more natural posture while on the move which in turn lessens impact.
The shoe’s reinforced extended-length upper is made of an abrasion-resistant, minimally-seamed mesh and has strategic overlays to aid in lateral stabilization and improve support and stability. An integrated GaiterTrap allows for the easy attachment of Altra gaiters (sold separately). A dual-layer EVA midsole with a top layer of Abound cushioning delivers comfort and reduces fatigue. A protective StoneGuard reduces the impact of rocks and roots underfoot.
The shoe has a stack height of 25 mm and weighs roughly 1 pound, 9 ounces per pair. A durable DuraTread rubber outsole with TrailClaw has a tacky surface and a lug pattern that together deliver excellent traction on a wide array of terrain.
Sold in pairs, the Altra Running Men’s Lone Peak 3.5 Mid Mesh hiking shoe is available in men’s full and half sizes.

Real Customer Reviews
- Bought these shoes as a birthday present for my friend. It’s his first pair of hiking shoes he really likes.
Likes: Excellent ankle support and breathability, comfortable toe box. He also likes zero drop. We just hiked/backpacked Havasu Falls, over 30 miles in 3 days, and he said his feet were happy.
Dislikes: It would be nice to have more color options in mid mesh. Had to get black since he does not like red color.
- Comfy toe box
Likes: The wide toe box. Flexible and soft sole.
Dislikes: They run small. Length wise.
- I am using the shoes for hiking/backpacking. The shoes are significantly more comfortable than hiking boots.
Likes: Lightweight, breathable. I like the zero drop (sole flatness) feature.
Dislikes: Altra's shoe sizing is inconsistent. I purchased a size 12 to replace a previous Altra water resistant version sized 11.5 to allow for more toe box room. The size 12 is narrower than my water resistant version 11.5.
