We are going to take a look at the innovative Therm-a-rest Neoair Xtherm Sleeping Pad. It's a light weight compressible inflatable pad that is equipped for four season usage.
The Neoair Xtherm comes in a number of different sizes. We are looking at the regular length so it’s 72 inches long, 20 inches wide. You can see the depth of that pad, a nice and comfortable base beneath you. Despite weighing in at just 15 ounces on the regular length, it does have an R value of 5.7, makes it extremely warm. The way Therm-a-rest achieves that internally, there is a reflective barrier, a stack reflective barrier inside the pad. It actually redirects the warmth of your body back up towards you instead of the pad losing that warmth into the ground beneath you. So it doesn't require actual insulation inside the pad. Keeps weight to a minimum keeps pack size to a minimum but delivers all the warmth you might need for cold weather, for snow camping, the year around usage.
Throughout its Neoair line of inflatable pads, Therm-a-rest uses a rather unique horizontal baffling. So you've got far more baffles on this pad than you find on traditional inflatable sleeping pads. What that does is actually gives you a more stable base, a more consistent base throughout the pad and avoids some of the bounciness or pull raft feeling than you can get again or traditional vertically baffled inflatable sleeping pads. It is inflatable so you do need to blow it up. You've got a valve here at the head of the pad. You can blow it up by mouth, close up very quickly. Therm-a-rest does also include a stack sac that doubles as a minimalist pump sac. So either to tap off the pad or to fully inflate it basically attaches this to the valve, let this fill with air and roll that air through the valve into the pad for full inflation.
I always suggest fully inflating the sleeping pad get it to its greatest depth and capacity lay on the pad. And it’s very easy to just reach over your shoulder, open the valve, let a little air out so you settle in to the most comfortable position for you and close the valve.
Not everyone finds that full inflation to be the most comfortable. It is an inflatable pad you are introducing air into the pad and it can settle a little bit throughout the night as temperatures change so keep in mind you may need to introduce a little bit of air during the night.
As we looked at it earlier, there is a stuff sac/ pump sac included with every Neoair Xtherm. Therm-a-rest also includes a small field repair kit should you need it. Draw string closure on the end. You can see, very small compact size, very light weight. This is easily going to fit inside just about any back pack out there and makes this a really versatile year round sleeping pad.
