I am wearing the Sierra Designs all seasons wind jacket. This is a great jacket for a day like today when it is pretty chilly and windy. This is made from a very durable, light weight, soft shell fabric. So it has got a great stretch to it and the fabric is going to hold up to rain pretty well. So if you have got a light rain, a windy day, this will be a great barrier.
I want to start by highlighting the construction of this jacket. You have welded seams throughout the jacket. So you have very few stitching lines, which gives it a really sleek look. And the fabric is really, really stretchy, so comfortable and easy to move in.
The full length zipper with a storm flap behind the zipper and the ... even though this is a durable soft shell jacket, on the inside you do have a nice next to skin feel. So if you are wearing a t-shirt it is comfortable against your arms.
I am wearing just a really light weight long sleeve shirt right now. Earlier I had on a heavier mid layer and it was just too bulky underneath of this jacket. So I normally wear a small in most outerwear pieces and I am wearing a small in this. And I feel like it fits pretty well, but if you are going to be wearing heavier layers underneath of it, I would suggest sizing up.
You have got two hand warmer pockets on this jacket and they are set up high enough that if you are backpacking and you are wearing a, you know, hip belt that you can still access these pockets. You also have a small chest pocket here.
On the cuffs you just have really easy access there if you need to cinch that down. Moving up to the hood, this is not a helmet compatible hood. It is more meant for backpacking. You do have elastic that runs all the way around the top. And so you can cinch down that hood to block the wind. An interesting construction on the hood is it is built to lay flat, so you don’t have that bulk of a really bunchy hood when you are not wearing it. So it is easy to wear with a backpack or another layer over top.
In keeping with the low profile design of this jacket, Sierra Designs has opted to use a dye cut arm venting under the arms instead of a bulky pit zipper. So if you are moving in this jacket the zipper isn’t going to get in the way. It is not going to feel bulky under your arms.
Going down to the hem, you do have an elastic draw cord are the bottom on either side and I will mention that the back of this jacket is a little bit lower than the front. So this can also work well as a biking piece.
All in all this jacket is going to perform really well in windy conditions and even a light rain, the Sierra Designs all season jacket.
