I am wearing the women’s Helium II jacket by Outdoor Research. This is a very light weight, water proof, breathable shell. It is made from a protex shield DS fabric with a little bit of stretch built into it so it is quite comfortable.
The key story on the women’s Helium II jacket is going to be about light weight and packability. As you can see here, it stuffs into its own pocket and this thing weighs in at juts under six ounces. There is a tab up here so you can easily hook it to a pack or a harness and take it with you. It is extremely small, light weight and packable and can go anywhere.
This jacket has a minimal set of features. It is going to cater to anyone who is a minimal hiker or backpacker. It has got the full front water front water proof zipper. You do have a water proof chest pocket here on the side. There is a single draw cord on the side here so you can cinch the bottom hem in around. You can note here on the sleeves there isn’t any sort of adjustable cuff. Outdoor Research has really stripped this thing down and gotten rid of all those extra things that you don’t really need. There is a nice piece of elastic and the cuff is cut a bit asymmetrical so it really fits well over the hand.
Even the hood on this jacket is a minimalist design, but Outdoor Research has done a very good job of making sure all the components you need are there. It does have a draw cord that runs around the brim and along the sides of the hood. There is a single adjustment point in the back here and when you cinch it in, you still get a really good fit around the head and that brim stays out in front to let water run off. It is not sticking out far enough that you can’t see, though.
This is a great rain shell. There is a great DWR which stands for durable water repellency on the outside of this jacket that just makes it shed water like crazy. The inside of the jacket has a very soft finish to it. It feels great against bare skin even when you are damp and clammy. And down here on the left side you can see here is that inside pocket that you can use to stow small items, but the jacket does tuck in there as we saw earlier.
