I’m wearing the Deuter Futura Vario 50 + 10 which is a really nice option for multi-day to extended backpacking trips. It’s a nice balance of weight, comfort and load hauling capabilities. You have well over 3000 cubic inch capacity in this pack and it has some expandability, can carry 40 pounds very comfortably and excellent organizational features too. We’ll take a closer look at those in a moment. I really like the suspension system on this pack and how it incorporates a number of different design features used in Deuter packs including this suspended back panel which put some separation between your back and the pack and allows air to flow. Beneath that is some framing of some very lightweight stays that give this pack some shape and also stabilize weight within the pack. There is good padding down below so you are not reliant solely on that suspended panel. You’ve got padding in the hipbelt and this is a flexing hipbelt that really mirrors your movement if you are into any off-trail scrambling. There is padding on the contoured shoulder straps with an adjustable sternum strap and plenty of other straps to really dial in that fit appropriately. This system here allows you to very easily accommodate height to it will fit a wide degree of different torso lengths and makes this pack that much more versatile. Now we are going to look at the organizational features on the Futura Vario, there is a lot to talk about here. It is obviously a top loading pack with good storage in the lid; A zippered pocket at the top and a zippered pocket underneath and Deuter’s SOS instructions printed there in case you need it along the way. You can see the enclosures here that further protect the contents of the pack but also give it expandability as you can adjust the height of the lid to accommodate that expanded capacity if and when you need it. A small zippered pocket here on the front for storing gear, again keeping it close at hand. You’ve also got stretch pockets on the side. I’ve got a water bottle on one side and trekking poles in the other. Additionally there are zippered side pockets in which you can store even more gear. So there’s just all kinds of places to store items away. A stand out feature on this pack, as far as I’m concerned, in addition to a lower sleeping bag compartment, is front access. This unclips and then unzips and can peel the whole way back to show you the contents of this pack, you can get right into it and it’s similar to luggage in that aspect but gives this pack excellent access that is not to be found on every pack out there. One last feature I’d like to show you is this dedicated pocket at the bottom in which Deuter includes a rain cover. Just one more bit of value for a pack that’s a good option for overnights, multi-days and extended backpacking.
