Hi, and welcome to Backcountry Edge. Today we’re going to take a look at the Alpine Pad from Kelty. This is a four-season pad, so it’s suitable for winter camping or snow sports. It’s a self inflating pad through a single valve and it has been tapered along the top shoulders and through the tail at the bottom. So it’s not too heavy, it’s good for lightweight backpacking. Ah, it is die-cut through the open cell foam at the top and this pad has a pretty unique feature to it and that is that the bottom of the pad is a closed cell piece for foam while the top is an open cell piece of foam. So you’re getting some good durability, insulation value out of this as well as comfort with that self inflating pad on the top. There is a Velcro slot in the back here that allows you to actually remove this piece of closed cell foam, completely slide it out and you’d be left with just the open cell foam on the top; lightens the pad up a bit although it will reduce the insulation value of the pad. The Alpine Pad weighs 2 pounds, 6 ounces and is one and three quarter inches thick. If you purchase this pad you will also get a stuff sack and a repair kit to go with it.
