Product Highlights

The durable, waterproof Men’s St. Elias GTX backpacking boot is built to tackle extended trips on any and all types of terrain, ranging rom maintained trails to rugged and rocky surfaces or bushwhacks. With a full leather, minimal-seam upper, all metal hardware lacing system and a burly, rubber toe rand, the Men’s St. Elias GTX is ready for tough conditions.

A full GORE-TEX bootie delivers waterproof/breathable performance that readies the Men’s St. Elias GTX for stream crossings and all day slogs in wet weather. An all metal lacing system at the ankle allows for quick lacing and fit adjustments while delivering an athletic, supportive feel. NOTE: There is a break in period with this boot due to the supportive, full leather construction.

Under foot you'll find a TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane) shank and a midsole with EVA cushioning protects the bottom of your foot from the impact of roots and rocks even under the weight of a heavy backpack. A dual-density EVA footbed cushions your foot to help keep you comfortable on high-mileage days. The outsole of the boot is a Vasque exclusive called Vibram Frontier which features aggressive lugs that deliver both uphill and downhill traction while shedding debris. Concentrated lugs in the heel beef up durability and increase traction.

The Vasque Men’s St. Elias GTX backpacking boot is available in men's full and half sizes. To keep the leather on this boot in good shape and to prevent water absorption in the upper for the life of the boot you should apply a leather conditioner or wax paste (both sold separately) waterproofing treatment.

Likes: I purchased these boots for their rugged, quality construction. I wanted something that would hold up to rocky ridgetop trails and protect my feet. The toe box is roomy and I like that the toe guard/bumper is stitched to the leather around the toe. The soles have a stiff shank and have a slight roller action to them. I'm looking forward to putting hundreds of miles on these boots and I expect they'll be up to the task.

Dislikes: I don't really consider this a negative point, but the boots are pretty stiff and need to be broken in. The top of the boot presses in on your leg a bit when they are new, so if you're hiking a lot of inclines/declines, sidehills, or maneuvering over rocks and flexing your ankle, you'll feel it. I wore these a few times on half-hour walks in the field with the dogs, and then did a 10-mile hike where I did a lot of the flexing mentioned above. After an hour of the hike, they seemed to relax a little, but after three hours I could feel my upper ankles getting tenderized and needing a break. So they will still need some additional breaking in.
