Product Highlights

Weighing less than 5 ounces and incredibly simple to use, the SteriPEN Journey water purifier offers versatility for travel, backcountry hiking and camping trips. Utilizing the same technology used to purify water in municipal treatment facilities, hospitals and water-bottling plants, the Journey destroys viruses, bacteria and cysts, including Giardia and Cryptosporidium, by using high-energy Ultraviolet (UV) light. The Journey purifies water quickly and efficiently without the need for chemicals or pumping.

The Journey makes purifying water a cinch. Simply fill a 1 liter (32 oz) or 0.5 liter (16 oz) glass, plastic, ceramic or metal container with clear water, push the activation button once for 1 liter or twice for 0.5 liters, dip it in the container and stir slightly to agitate the water. It takes the Journey just 90 seconds to purify 1 liter and a mere 48 seconds to purify 0.5 liters! Ultraviolet light is invisible to the human eye, but a visible blue light indicates that the Journey is working and shuts off as soon as a full dose has been delivered. An easy-to-read LCD screen displays the dose selection, the battery life status and the time remaining in the purification process. The LCD screen also tracks the number of uses and alerts you as the UV lamp approaches its 10,000 cycle life limit.

The UV light breaks down the DNA of viruses, bacteria and cysts, rendering them harmless. NOTE: This process does NOT remove particulates like dirt or grit from the water. Because the penetration of UV light can be limited by discoloration, solids and debris, it is important that clear, unfrozen water be used. The SteriPEN Water Bottle Pre-Filter (sold separately) can be employed to filter particulate-filled water before UV treatment takes place.

The Journey is powered by two CR123 batteries (included). The Journey's electronics are designed to activate only as long as there is enough battery power available to produce the required UV dosage, so there is no risk of an inadequate dose as batteries run low.

Each SteriPEN Journey includes a neoprene carrying case and a user's guide.

Likes: Very light - this seems to be the way to go for us ultralighters. Unlike other reviews I've read, this will fit inside a Gatorade-type bottle, but no smaller opening. Very sturdy construction and I like the LED screen unlike the Adventurer model. This will let you know your battery status, which is crucial.

Dislikes: You must pre-filter your water before treatment, but that is to be expected. Just use women's nylons or some other type of prefilter.
