Product Highlights

Utilizing the same technology used to purify water in municipal treatment facilities, hospitals and water-bottling plants, the SteriPEN Classic is the only portable water purifier that destroys viruses, bacteria and cysts, including Giardia and Cryptosporidium, by using high-energy Ultraviolet (UV) light. SteriPEN Classic is easy to operate and purifies water quickly and efficiently without the need for chemicals or pumping.

Thanks to the SteriPEN Classic, purifying water is a cinch. Simply fill a 16 oz. or 32 oz. glass, plastic, ceramic or metal container with clear water, push the SteriPEN Classic button once for 32 oz. or twice for 16 oz., dip it in the container and stir slightly to agitate the water. Ultraviolet light is invisible to the human eye, but a visible blue light indicates that the SteriPEN Classic is working and shuts off as soon as a full dose has been delivered. The SteriPEN Classic purifies 16 oz. of water in less than a minute and 32 oz. in 90 seconds! The UV light breaks down the DNA of viruses, bacteria and cysts, rendering them harmless.

Because the penetration of UV light can be limited by discoloration, solids and debris, it is important that clear, unfrozen water be used. The SteriPEN Water Bottle Pre-Filter is included to filter particulate-filled water before UV treatment takes place.

The SteriPEN Classic requires 4 AA batteries, sold separately. Alkaline or lithium batteries will work in the SteriPEN Classic, but rechargeable Nickel Metal Hydride batteries are your best option, as they last far longer and outperform other batteries in cold temperatures. The SteriPEN Classic's electronics are designed to activate only as long as there is enough battery power available to produce the required UV dosage, so there is no risk of an inadequate dose as batteries run low.

The ultraviolet lamp used by the SteriPEN Classic is very durable, providing up to 5,000 doses. To ensure that the SteriPEN Classic provides optimal effectiveness, the lamp is automatically disabled after 5,000 doses and a red LED light alerts you that a new lamp is required.

    Likes: Works well, consistent, reliable.

Dislikes: The single button and red/green light to know when water is sterilized. I wish it just had an on/off switch so I could time it myself.

Likes: This product seems to live up to its claims, which is why I am excited about putting it in my pack. It is simple to use (no time-limited mixtures, no correct dosages, no hoses to fight or filters to clog) and it kills both bacteria and critters, like giardia. Friends tell me that the batteries last forever. Adding no taste to the water is important to me.

Dislikes: I bought this product fully aware of the standard objections:
    The eerie blue light..
The water must be clear, not cloudy for it to work (HOW clear? How do I know?)
The need to bring batteries on the trail
To this I add that you need to have a wide-mouth water bottle

Likes: I have used mine a couple dozen times now and it seems to be very effective at disabling all the little bad guys in the water. I always use the SteriPen prefilter to ensure I have particulate free water. Use lithium AA batteries, they weigh less, provide more power, and have a long shelf life. With batteries and case mine weighs 6.48 oz.

This is the way to go for quick safe water. Chemicals take a long time and filters are a pain.

Dislikes: A little heavy, the Adventure Opti weighs less and is just as effective.

Likes: I can't believe I never rated my steripen! I've had it for a while now, and I love it. I've not had any failures, although I've carried iodine tablets as backup.

Dislikes: It can be time-consuming. I sterilize one liter at a time and then transfer to my three-liter camelback.

Likes: Easy to use. Weight and size are not too much for inclusion in backpacking. Works great will all small mouth water bottles.

Dislikes: Leaves the water with a very slight 'burnt' flavor. Could be because the light is so new and the water is extremly clear/clean prior to use. Wouldn't discourage me from purchasing the item though. Overall it is a great product.

Likes: So easy to use!! Was critical to our canoe trip.

Dislikes: Absolutely nothing. Do note, however, that water cannot have suspended particles (as is emphasized in the directions).
