Product Highlights

Providing optimal filtering and purification, the SteriPEN Classic Bottle Pack includes the SteriPEN Classic water purifier, a 32 ounce water bottle and a SteriPEN Water Bottle Pre-filter. Utilizing the same technology used to purify water in municipal treatment facilities, hospitals and water-bottling plants, the SteriPEN Classic is the only portable water purifier that uses high-energy Ultraviolet (UV) light to destroy viruses, bacteria and cysts, including Giardia and Cryptosporidium. The SteriPEN Classic is easy to operate and purifies water quickly and efficiently without the need for chemicals or pumping.

Thanks to the SteriPEN Classic, purifying water is a cinch. Simply secure the threaded SteriPEN Water Bottle Pre-filter to the top of the water bottle, fill with water, remove the pre-filter, push the SteriPEN Classic button, dip it in the container and stir slightly to agitate the water. Ultraviolet light is invisible to the human eye, but a visible blue light indicates that the SteriPEN Classic is working and shuts off as soon as a full dose has been delivered. The SteriPEN Classic purifies 32 oz. in only 90 seconds! The UV light breaks down the DNA of viruses, bacteria and cysts, rendering them harmless.

Because the penetration of UV light can be limited by discoloration, solids and debris, it is important that clear, unfrozen water be used. When clear water is unobtainable, the SteriPEN Water Bottle Pre-filter easily and efficiently removes particulates and debris prior to the UV water treatment.

The SteriPEN Classic requires 4 AA batteries, sold separately. Alkaline or lithium batteries will work in the SteriPEN Classic, but rechargeable Nickel Metal Hydride batteries are your best option, as they last far longer and outperform other batteries in cold temperatures. The SteriPEN Classic's electronics are designed to activate only as long as there is enough battery power available to produce the required UV dosage, so there is no risk of an inadequate dose as batteries run low.

The Ultraviolet lamp used by the SteriPEN Classic is very durable, providing up to 5,000 doses. To ensure that the SteriPEN Classic provides optimal effectiveness, the lamp is automatically disabled after 5,000 doses and a red LED light alerts you that a new lamp is required.

Likes: I love the steripen. With a little practice it is easy to use and very simple. I like the fact it runs on AA batteries, since they are plentiful at most stops.

Dislikes: water bottle that comes with it is a little heavy. But for the price a good deal.

Likes: Comes with the pre-filter to ensure that water is not too silty or murky. Small size and quick compared to traditional filter systems. This kit came with a bottle, but will also fit any standard Nalgene bottle. I chose this model because of the availability of AA batteries as opposed to some of the more obscure sizes. this does make it a bit heavier, though. So far, no problems with my steri-pen!

Dislikes: Steri-pen recommends lithium batteries because of the short life of alkaline batteries. I haven't experienced dead batteries yet, but I carry purification tabs as a backup because the weight of extra batteries plus the ones inside the steri-pen would be too much.

Likes: It is nice to not have to carry a slow pressure water purification kit along with you. I took it on a trip to South America and it was nice to have to purify tap water. The nice thing about this particular model is it takes batteries that can be found almost anywhere.

Dislikes: Although the batteries can be found just about anywhere, it makes it much bigger than the other steriPens. The filter that came with the bottle was not very good, it did not seem to take much dirt out and was very slow. My biggest complaint was I was never sure if the water was safe to drink. I never go sick so I guess it worked. I purified water out of the Amazon and I couldn't tell if it was clear enough for the SteriPen to do its job.
