Product Highlights

The lightweight, compact SteriPEN Adventurer Opti water purifier is ideal for backcountry hiking, camping trips or international travel. Utilizing the same technology used to purify water in municipal treatment facilities, hospitals and water-bottling plants, the Adventurer Opti destroys viruses, bacteria and cysts, including Giardia and Cryptosporidium, by using high-energy Ultraviolet (UV) light. The Adventurer Opti is easy to operate and purifies water quickly and efficiently without the need for chemicals or pumping.

The Adventurer Opti makes purifying water a cinch. Simply fill a 16 oz or 32 oz glass, plastic, ceramic or metal container with clear water, push the activation button once for 32 oz or twice for 16 oz, dip it in the container and stir slightly to agitate the water. Ultraviolet light is invisible to the human eye, but a visible LED light indicates that the Adventurer Opti is working and shuts off as soon as a full dose has been delivered. The Ultraviolet light breaks down the DNA of viruses, bacteria and cysts, rendering them harmless. The Adventurer Opti purifies 16 oz of water in 48 seconds and 32 oz in 90 seconds!

Safety features on the Adventurer Opti include an optical water sensor, temperature sensors and a fully-enclosed and insulated lamp. Together these features ensure that the Adventurer Opti works at optimal performance and its internal components remain fully functional. The bulb that indicates purification is taking place also doubles as an emergency light source, enabling the Adventurer Opti to serve as an LED flashlight.

NOTE: Because the penetration of UV light can be limited by discoloration, solids and debris, it is important that clear, unfrozen water be used. The SteriPEN FitsAll Filter or Water Bottle Pre-Filter (both sold separately) can be employed to filter particulate-filled water before UV treatment takes place.

The Adventurer Opti is powered by two CR123 batteries (included). The Adventurer Opti's electronics are designed to activate only as long as there is enough battery power available to produce the required UV dosage, so there is no risk of an inadequate dose as batteries run low.

Likes: I bought this SteriPEN specifically for backpacking and camping. I first thought about purchasing one when I was taking my Wilderness First Responder course, and my instructor demonstrated how one worked. I've spent a lot of time drinking iodine over the years while hiking, and I'm quite relieved those days are over. This product sterilizes your water using modern technology, and doesn't affect the taste of the water one bit. The button is easy to press, well manufactured, great concept, perfect for the outdoors. Besides, you never know when you might need one! This would also be great during any kind of disaster, so having one handy is comforting. I would recommend this product!

    Dislikes: No complaints!

Likes: Haven't tested long term yet but so far this thing is awesome. REALLY light and pretty idiot proof. I like that it kills virus' too. Sterile water is good peace of mind. I bring this and that Sawyer pouch filter contraption. Together, you can filter out sediment, clean EVERYTHING out of your water and they only weigh something like 6 ounces together. 3.5 oz for the SteriPen and about 3 oz for the Sawyer thing.

Dislikes: Batteries always make me a little nervous, but if you bring/keep around extras you should be fine. Looking forward to a solar powered version that actually works (don't hear good things about the solar charger they have now)or a crank powered version like those battery-less flashlights to eliminate the possibility of running out of juice.

Likes: This water purifier works great. We generally hike where the water is clear and the pen does a good job of purifying the water without adding a weird taste. Easy to use. Compact and lightweight. Reliable so far. Will need to get a pre-filter if we pack to areas with cloudy water.

Dislikes: Perhaps the need for a separate pre-filter, but not a big deal.

Likes: Went on an AT trek with Scout Troop and we took two of these, they were all we needed for the entire trip. Worked great at keeping 11 of us fully hydrated for 1.5 weeks in hot/humid conditions. Took tablets as a backup but never took them out of the pack!

    Dislikes: Batteries

Likes: Compact, quick and easy to use. Great for sterilizing water from a running creek or river. Works good from a lake if you can find clear water without sediment. There is a filter you can purchase or use a bandana/cloth.

Dislikes: Need to pre filter water if there is sediment in the source. Unless you like to chew your water :).

Likes: works great with my Katadyne. I feel great knowing my family will be safe drinking water that is untreated. It is light weight and portable.

Likes: Awesome product and very quick to condition your water. I also bought the matching 40 micron water filter which I use to first filter the water and then use the sterilite pen to remove the bacteria. Works great although you do need the large mouth bottles (like Nalgene) so that you can get the pen into the water easily.

    Dislikes: Nothing

Likes: It is light weight, I have used it a couple of times, seems to work well.

Dislikes: It is a little hard to see the green light in the day time, even when trying to give it shade with your hand,

Likes: AWESOME! Much better purification than tablets or chemicals, won't give a taste and much healthier for you. Small and lightweight. I carry tablets as a backup only.

Dislikes: Batteries, wish I could avoid them but this is the tradeoff for no chemicals.

Likes: Very easy to use, simple and light weight. Works well for an individual. Comes with a nice little carrying case. I like that it has an indicator light that lets you know if the pen did or didn't work.

Dislikes: The worst part about the product are the rare, expensive batteries. If you can get past that, this is a great product!

Likes: Just as advertised. When not in basecamp, dunk the bottle and zap with the pen! Great accessory assuming that you can quantities of relatively clean water into a bottle ( I have pumped water out of a puddle on the top of a piece of granite in the Adirondack mountains before).

    Dislikes: All good.
